This truly is a tragedy, as is most of Russia's history. I saw the same thing happening - and still happening today - in Novosibirsk, where I lived a while back (see "39 Months in Siberia" for the complete hair-raising tale). The situation basically stays the same in Russia. The majority of rich people there - and there are many - are all criminals. So with this newly-found "freedom," it's take the money and run. There is very little investing in a business to make it grow. The suits take all the earnings from their companies - left-over communist cronies - and pay their employees starvation wages. Unfortunately, very little has changed for the Russian population after Peristroika. The one exception to this is the IT industry; there one can actually make decent money - even if it is a Russian company.

If they demolish a lot of Moscow it would probably not be a bad thing. A lot of those Soviet buildings were put up very shoddily and have no redeeming value. Stalin had already gutted the old city and built the concrete mess that is there today St Petersburg should be saved. That is a lovely city that had not been too worked over by the USSR's building spree. If it were to loose it's character now, that would be too bad.

My sister just returned from a trip to Moscow & St. Pete. Traveled between the cities by river.
Her career has beed in urban planning in the DC/Metro area. I'll be interested to discuss this with her & see if she has any current pics of these old buildings.. This video is interesting: http://www.russiatoday.com/Art_and_Fun/2009-05-30/Cultural_heritage_in_ruins__is_there_a_future_for_Russia_s_historic_mansions.html |
