Spider ID

I looked in Google images and a few other places but no luck.

Any ideas what this is? He/she has been in the garden for a few weeks catching dinner in it's web. I have not bugged it as it's big (size of a silver dollar including legs) and kind of scary.

MY BUDDY!!!

If you have ANYTHING in your garden...this "little" baby will protect it for you...

She'll scare the ever-loving s-it out of your shorts, but she'll also eat/attack/devour anything that comes close to where she's at...so if you want UNBLEMISHED tomatoes, peppers or anything else plantwise, leave her alone and enjoy your harvest...

You'll have her (him?) to thank for it...

You'll never need to spray insecticides or anything like that to keep your plants happy...she'll get fat, but she'll stay fast and you'll get the best unblemished harvest you've ever seen...

I have no plans on evicting her. She is quite pretty. I was just reading on Wiki that at the first front, she will die. She lays her eggs in a sac and guards them for as long as she is able but come winter...poof. When spring rolls around the eggs will hatch. Most will fly away on silk strings (like in Charlots web) but some will stay local. She has about 5 or so kills in her web.

Around our house, we just refer to those as Argiope (the genus). They're very pretty spiders, and they can catch some fairly large prey. One year we had one in our yard that caught a small anole (lizard) in her web.

We're currently in the thick of the season for golden silk spiders, Nephila clavipes. It's wise to be mindful where we walk around the shrubs and trees in our yard, as many of the prime hunting spots are occupied by these big girls!

There are some good "click-to-enlarge" pictures of one of these at this site.

we used to call those orb web spiders. they are really cool. we would catch grasshoppers and throw them in the web and those spiders would have em wrapped up in about 5 seconds after they hit the web. pretty neat
