Laughing Yoga

I was out walking the hounds a while ago and passed by a group in the park.

All were standing in a circle wearing funny hats. I thought it was a Monty Python skit until I saw the "Laughing Yoga Class" sign.

It sounded like they were running through some sort of laugh sound vocalization, just getting warmed up.

"We've all heard the phrase, "Laughter is the Best Medicine," but does laughter really help in relieving not only stress, but also disease?

One of the foremost pioneers in humor therapy was Norman Cousins. In his book entitled Anatomy of an Illness (as Perceived by the Patient), he recounts his battle with a connective tissue disease, ankylosing spondylitis. While all the specialists' prognoses were poor, Mr. Cousins believed that he could, in fact, "cure himself". He used humor as both a painkiller and a substitute for chemical therapy. He found that watching old Marx Brothers movies evoked genuine belly laughter, which led to at least two hours of pain-free sleep and a significant drop in his sedimentary level. With daily doses of laughter, combined with active participation in his medical treatment, Mr. Cousins made a full recovery. Almost 20 years later, he suffered a massive heart attack. Using the same philosophy of laughter and "partnership" with his physicians, he again made a full recovery. Mr. Cousins, who was the editor of Saturday Review, became a member of the faculty of UCLA's School of Medicine in 1978, specializing in the field of biochemistry of emotions."

I believe Mr. Cousins is now dead.

Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis.

A short history of medicine:
I have an earache.
2000 B.C. - Here, eat this root
1000 A.D. - That root is heathen, say this prayer.
1850 A.D. - That prayer is superstition, drink this potion.
1940 A.D. - That potion is snake oil, swallow this pill.
1965 A.D. - That pill is ineffective, take this antibiotic.
2009 A.D. - That antibiotic is artificial. Here, eat this root.

I've got an uncle out in suburban Seattle who is an advanced level (has some difficult to obtain certification, couldn't tell you what it is) Yoga instructor. I'll have to ask him about it. He's definitely a bit "off", I could picture him doing such a thing.

sounds like a typical day in Ithaca, NY. at my job, yoga instructors are invited in to do 2 hour blocks of fifteen minute yoga exercises or basic instructions to any employee that signs up, just about every week or so. yoga is a religion and way of life around here. the two or three primary care doctors i've had here all recommended it to "help cure" my A-type personality. it's all just part of the charm that is ithaca.

we've got pot holes bigger than my house that we can't seem to fix but the government pulled it together to create and dedicate an official "Grateful Dead Day" on the anniversary of jerry garcia's death. woo hoo.
