Seems to triumph the turbo encabulator Chrysler had in the early 90's.

Hey now, that was one of the most sophisticated and amazing transmissions ever created! They didn't even know how it worked!

If calibrated correctly it would seem to me to be an excellent solution to the problem.

With my knee getting worse I am thinking of automatic trannies.

I wonder if one will work on an autocross course?

Weren't CVT's outlawed from F1 a few years ago ? if so - way to go FIA for stifling the research in high HP cvt's...

Us enthusiasts may not like them, but I see them as another way to incrementally increase the efficiency of the gas/diesel reciprocating engine (a gas-electric hybrid is another way to slightly increase efficiency)
its these incremental increases that are going to keep reciprocating engines around for a while. Not that I want a CVT, but right now, I'd prefer one to a BEV (Battery electric vehicle...).

I've driven the small dodge CVT, and the Nissan Altima with CVT- neither were inspiring but if a majority of drivers were looking for a great "driving experience", this forum would be a lot bigger than it already is =)

Longiveity is probably just good enough to go 100k miles and get it out of the dealers lot/manufacturers warranty domain. Raise your hand if you are surprised.

The Williams F1 car had an CVT trans that was banned before its first race. I viewed a cutaway of the trans and was surprisingly simple-much like a high tech snowmobile trans.
There was a Dutch car maker, DAF, that used a CVT way back in the '60s They had a formula car-not F1-equipped with their CVT and it has some success.
But cars equipped with a CVT sound like leaf blowers.

The Nissan salesman that went with us last year to test drive a new Altima told us CVT's have fewer components and are more durable than regular automatics. Given that this was coming from a salesman I took everything with a fistful of salt, but there could be some truth to that, although I've also read that the Civic CVT's, at least the early ones like those in the natural-gas version of the car, started to have trouble as early as 40K miles.

I thought I had read somewhere that when ford had the cvt that they were going to program it to feel like it was shifting even though it really will not.

My Honda Insight had the CVT, I drove it to 120k miles with no issues.

When put in "sport" mode it did a good job of keeping the engine in the sweet spot, and around town it performed very well.

Does your new Nissan have a little button on the shifter? Its on the left hand side and if you push it when driving at around 3,000+ RPM it jumps up and makes the car go faster. Our 2009 had it and I think it was an overdrive button. I dont exaclty remember what it was used for.

does anyone remember "speed shifting"? years ago (back in the dinosaur age), a friend of mine managed to get his hands on a 1966 Corvette complete with a 427 V-8 and a four speed. when he speed shifted (gas pedal held all the way to the floor through the shift) the shift about gave us both whip lash. nice positive shift, no wimpy rice rocket variable speed jello, marshmellow, turning to goo, shift experience.

Yes it does, and it disables what it thinks is overdrive...

This things not that great. The seats are super uncomfortable.

And that's desirable to you? I'd take the jello/goo shift experience over whip lash any day.

different strokes for different folks. when he started that big V8, there wasn't anyone that didn't notice. for me there will always be something appealing about an American muscle car. start up a 427 Chevrolet, 428 Ford Cobrajet or a 426 Hemi and the car growls and roars, something a rice rocket just can't deliver. and, my friend's Corvette ALWAYS got the attention of the ladies, something guys with minivans don't enjoy.

I find any highly noisy vehicle annoying, be it a rice burner with a fart pipe or some old gas guzzler. Now I can understand why someone would like a big, powerful and growly engine, but I don't understand why anyone would like their automatic to shift so hard that it nearly gives you whip lash. What's so appealing about it?
