Ambien will knock you out for too long, it's not an 8 hour flight. Nyquil is the way to go, double shot. Better have some Red Bull ready on the other side. Don't drive when you get there, cab to the hotel.

Suck it up, or sit in the airport bar and get drunk before you have to depart. Sneaking on booze is hard, and buying inflight is expensive. So just get silly falling down drunk and after 5 hours you should be pretty sober when you land.

I enjoy getting slightly sloshed as much as the next guy, but this idea is completely moronic. The last thing you want to do is drink alcohol before or during a flight. Inflight pressurized air is extremely dry and alcohol drys you out as well. With a cabin altitude of 7 or 8 thousand feet, your oxygen level is low, which will compound the experience of feeling $hitfaced. And when the flight is finished, you'll feel like hammered $hit. Now after the flight, well that's a different story.

I have a phobia too, but I had a revelation several years ago...I was in a car wreck, and it was a doozie. I had very little recollection of it, just a flash of white as the airbag went off in my face. I figure, chances are, if the plane goes down, especially if it has a sudden "event", I won't be aware for more than a second or two.

I don't fear being dead, there are just certain ways I'd prefer not to die.

As an aside, the funeral home where I worked in the 80s got one of the victims of the Pan Am flight that was blown up over Lockerbie...not a pretty sight. The family wanted to know if they could see him...we suggested that they would do better to remember him as he was prior to the flight...
