Buh bye Vista, Buh bye!
Well my Vista Ultimate joke of an operating system installed a necessary update this morning. I had no idea it was Haraikiri.exe as the machine promptly committed suicide!
Well that gave me the excuse I was looking for to install the Windows 7 Ultimate Release Candidate system I have had sitting around. The installer took two tries to work, but once the OS was installed my machine is a new animal! It is much faster and has not crashed since I finished the install. I usually HATE Microsoft so the software I installed is Open Office 3.1 Gimp2 (photoshop clone) Dia (Visio clone) putty and filezilla for Unix server access Cygwin for X windows emulation Trillian Astra chat client and Firefox As you can see all the above is FREE software. It all works fine! Oh and a real test was our time sheet software that WOULD NOT work under Vista no matter what. Well it runs just fine under W7 WOO HOO! And I even have more disk space! I am now going to dual boot Solaris and VMware on this laptop. Bill Gates got something right!

I'm running the full beta of windows 7 on my macbook, but I'm on OSX right now...
I like windows 7 it's nice, I've never owned Vista, but it didn't interest me. My friend had the exact same experience you had, his laptop was running horrible with vista but after windows 7 came into the picture, it's like a whole new computer.

Over the years, I've run 98, NT, ME, 2k, XP, Vista and now 7. I beta tested 7, and simply put, it's come a ways from Vista (although, with a lot of the same innards). Microsoft really listened to the customer for this one.
My next computer build is definitely getting Windows 7 put on it.

Windows 7 x64 Ultimate is by far the best OS they've done. No way I could go back to XP.

I bought a new hp laptop a couple months ago. I just cant justify the cost of a mac for what I do. The computer came with a free windows 7 upgrade when it comes out. I hope it turns out to be good. I have not had any problems with my computer yet. As a side note, I recently powered up my five year old dell laptop after not starting it in almost two years due to it not accepting my power cord and I finally got it to accept a charge if i got the ac cord in the sweet spot. That computer runs xp and it booted up so fast i couldnt believe it. it smoked this laptop.

Mac is "ight" I tend to have problems with OSX here and there but it doesn't bother me. It's just ridiculous how expensive everything is for mac... 80$ for a macbook charger! L...O...L
Windows 7 is nice and smooth and it's a great OS.. Although OSX for some reason picks up wifi much better than the same computer was able to with 7. I don't know why :/

I've used Vista. I "borrowed" a key from a machine at Walmart and got the OEM DVD from a torrent site.
I wanted a quick trial. I ended up using it for a couple of months. I liked it, but to me it wasn't worth the money. Too expensive at the time and XP was more the enough to handle what I need. Nowadays I dual boot between 10.6 and Windows 7. I did a clean install of 10.6 a week ago and love the 64bit deliciousness with Pro Tools 8. When windows 7 comes out i'll use my student discount to get a 65$ copy of ultimate. I'm not a shrill for either operating system. Like i've said in other forums, an OS is a tool. Nothing more nothing less. I spend too much time troubleshooting OSX and XP that both have their problems and nuances. Same goes for hardware. When people ask me what computer to buy, I say what's their budget. Aim for at least 2gb of on board ram and a video card with at least 256mb of ram. Any new computer will come with a descent processor to handle what you need. Brands are worthless in the computer world. Personally I had a great time with a whitebox laptop (made by asus) that lasted me 4 years before I crushed its screen when I fell off my bike. Don't be like the foolish masses. Use what is the most useful to you and learn safe computing practices. I see you're using firefox Have you put adblock plus on yet?

I've been working with Windows 7 and agree that it is pretty darn good....though I am still partial to XP....once Windows 7 is actually out and for sale I will probably complete my switchover.
MAC, while "a good computer" I suppose.....is just too expensive. I can't understand why people march into their stores like Zombies and pay such inflated prices. Its reeeally not worth it....being frugal, it goes against my grain of being.... People who think that $1500 for a decent laptop is a "good deal" have way too much cash on their hands. I consider $300-400 a good deal for a laptop/netbook. And so far all the ones I've bought have been less than that.

I understand this to be the case as well. I've heard it's just a properly operating vista. W-7 is the system that should have come out to begin with.

I despise Microsoft as well, so I have all but completely (except for work) turned to Linux. The vast majority of distros are completely free, and some of them like Ubuntu are very user friendly. They have come a long way for the average user from where they used to be.
I haven't had Microsoft on my machine for a year now.
