From what I hear, go with 7, many troubles with vista reported.
Yet I have no experience with either.

GO WITH 7
GO WITH 7 GO WITH 7 GO WITH 7 GO WITH 7 GO WITH 7 GO WITH 7 Vista sucks big time! my system has not crashed since loading the 7 release candidate a month ago. Under Vista Ultimate Rip-Off 64 it would crash at least TWICE A DAY! Of course for a REAL operating system download Open Solaris 64 for Intel/AMD

Windows 7 is a bit faster, more stable, and a slicker interface. No brainer. If your system will have over 3gb of RAM, go for the 64bit version.

MS apparently has a feature of Win 7 that allows installation onto diskless netbooks via USB thumb drives. That's a good move to simplify the transition for all those XP netbooks.

Almost all the windows users I know have stayed with XP (skipped vista) and are waiting to see how 7 works out before the load it. These are all guys who can't afford to lose productivity due to a flaky OS. I assume they will eventually end up with 7.

Rule of thumb: wait for the first service pack to be released before adopting a new OS. That may be more applicable for upgrades rather than a new purchase though.
However, 7 is supposed to be streamlined with fewer bells and whistles, so it may not have the teething problems other releases have. I've been running Vista on 3 computers for nearly two years and it's never frozen or crashed. One of those was pre-installed; one was "Vista Compatible" that I upgraded and one is about 5 years old, but still works fine with Vista. Clean installs on all machines with updated Vista drivers, though, no "auto-upgrades" onto the XP image. If you can get a great deal on a Vista machine discounted due to the OS, I'd strongly consider that. That's how I got my XP-loaded laptop when Vista was released. Saved a few hundred bucks. |
