Tire chains?

Anyone use them? With winter looming and a 2wd pickup truck with an open rear end; its not looking good. The last RWD vehical I drove in the snow was my old 300SD which sucked and had one hell of a time making it up my hill. The trucks probably going to be worse...

Looks like I could get a pair for less than $80, I'm thinking it might be a good purchase.

They are going to be a PITA though because I'd have to keep taking them on and off.

Yeah you do realize tire chains = max of about 30-35mph right?

Why not just get real good snow tires for the rear + 5-6 bags of sand?

I've had no issues with my SD + some sand bags....and I bet our winter is a bit more fierce around here than yours...

I keep a set of chains in the 300D, just in case. I needed to use them once when I got caught in an unexpected storm and needed to crawl home.

I've used them. If you really need them, they're hard to beat. I'd begin with studded snow tires. I run them all the way around on the TD and 116.

Chains are cheaper than tires, I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible.

Maybe I'll just try sandbags with new all season tires.

I very rarely get stuck driving in the snow, I only really need them maybe 2-3 times a year.

Now that my friend has his Polaris 800 we don't need to take a vehical out in a snowstorm to go to the package store.

Check on Craiglist. I got my studded snows on Craiglist really cheap. Lots of people trade in or sell their cars while they keep their snow tires in the garage.

Not sure of the cost or your budget but for ease of use these are hard to beat.

I've only used chains a couple of times but I agree 100% - they are at least an order of magnitude better than any snow tire I've ever used.

Unfortunately they are several orders of magnitude more of a pain in the neck to manage than a set of snow tires. If I lived in a state like Colorado I'd have a set in the trunk for emergencies.

Stay home when snow on the road is deep.
I haven't used snow tires in 10 years because the road crews keep the roads plowed. Put acoupla hundred pounds of weight in the bed.

Usually it's a matter of trying to get home.

Indeed. I had to go down a (city!) road last winter during a snow storm by a satellite lot for my work.....the snow was deeper than the center caps on the wheels. And I had to drive through a drift as high as my hood star to get out of the parking lot. (took a running start!)

It was slow progress, but I eventually made it up the road (a hill on top of it) after several minutes of pedal to the metal. 617 power!!

The best part was the big trail of black soot in the snow all the way up the street.

I hear ya. I live in PA, so heavy snowfall isn't as common as it is in CO.

Currently at 12+ inches today. Probably 18 by morning.
School closed today. Hoping for the same tomorrow.

Getting home is the problem, I'm usualy stuck at school when the snow starts or at work.
