2009 MLB World Series

New York Yankees, 26 time WS Champions, American League Champions

Philadelphia Phillies, Defending WS Champions, National League Champions

During the 2009 season the Yankees and the Phillies played against each other 3 times, with the Phillies taking 2 wins.

In a few more years they will be playing the WS in the middle of winter. Silly, baseball should be played during the summer, during the day, outside, on real grass.

It was indeed a masterpiece.
I do think the season is too long, but we can't change it this year. Tonight was awesome for Phillie fans and tomorrow night should be just plain entertaining with Pedro and A.J. on the mound.

Pedro had a good showing, but not as good as A.J.. If the pitching stays this good for the rest of the Series, it may come down to homers.

Pretty much being a WS only fan. When did the late in the year series stuff happen? I seem to recall getting home from school and turning on the series when it was still pretty warm and sunny out as a kid.

I have no idea, I lost interest sometime in the late 60s.

I think it started recently. The number of games/year has not changed in decades so I think the post season schedules have been extended to maximize TV viewer numbers and the attendent advertising revenue.

The TV marketing drives everything.. Many kids who would be great fans are denied the opportunity to watch the World Series because the TV market wants the games in Prime Time. This year is not so bad, as both teams are on the east coast. But west coast games are way late for people in the eastern time zone.
Games used to be played in the afternoon, and kids would smuggle transistor radios to school to listen. Now they are in bed, asleep before the 3rd inning.. MLB sucks are preserving the love of the game.

Man o man, does THAT bring back memories! Sitting in a classroom full of people and all the guys looked they had hearing aids on. Those hokey old earplug speakers, wires running behind their ears, tucked inside their collars, exiting out between the 2nd and third buttons on their shirt and plugged into that 4 lb transistor radio "hidden" in the front left pocket. Everybody turning in their seats to get the clearest reception, changing seats to get out from under the neon lights. Actually staying in their seats when the class change bell rang waiting for the final out of the inning, praying for rain so Gym class would be canceled (tough to hide a radio in gym trunks and tee-shirts), not speaking to Donny/Frank/Ralph 'cause he was a Cardinals/Dodgers/anybody but the Yankees fan...

Yup, then we all got a little older and discovered sex, drugs, and rock & roll. I don't think I've watched an entire game since I was 12.

Watch? Watch? Shucks, nobody watches ballgames. No, the radio is the only way to follow the Series!

Some of those radio announcers could put you into the park. Vin Sculley, Red Barber and their ilk didn't need no "instant replay" or "Let's look at the monitors to see where the play occurred" B.S. which is all you hear on TV.

Nah, it was all about having the radio on in the background, ears perking up with a runner leading off in the fifth, conversation stopped, a collective sigh as that lead footed SOB got picked off, AGAIN, and then back to whatever you were doing.

Real commercials. Farmer John hot dogs, local insurance sponsers, Joe Snardley's Chevrolet dealership ("Your local home town dealer, where we care about you"), Ace Hardware, etc.

Geckos, Viagra and "going problems" were never mentioned and we didn't have to watch some clown climbing in and out of bathtubs sitting in the middle of nowhere.

Damn this getting old anyway!

Baseball is probably the best radio sport. It's the best sport, period, but it is particularly good on the radio. The problem I have is that the only radio I get in the house is by internet, which is delayed several seconds behind the TV. When the TV commentators get too annoying, which is often, I watch the TV coverage with no audio. I will say, though, I have found Tim McCarver to be less annoying this year. Maybe somebody told him to tone it down a notch. He's still annoying, but not quite as bad as usual. The thing I hate about McCarver is that he will constantly criticize coaching decisions. Then on plays when the coaching decision goes bad, he will pontificate about how he told you so. When the coaching decision turns out OK, he just doesn't say anything about it.

Vin Scully is the best I've heard.

Home runs continue to dominate the scoring in the WS. It does look like the real story in this match up is the pitching. You either have outstanding control and placement, or you're going to pay the price, since both teams seem to be able to score from home plate.
