Vintage Rolex question...

I'm seeing some interesting old Rolex's on ebay from the 50's and 60's. How do you know that they are real and not Chinese specials?

I don't know enough about them, but the ebay feedback is probably worth something in this case,

That vintage of Rolex is very cool, much nicer than the new ones.

I have a 1957 Rolex California. I did quite a bit of research on vintage Rolex's when I purchased mine and as far as I could find, the vintage ones aren't copied. If you want a good deal on one, check out your local pawn shops.

I like the older ones a lot, they are sleek and pretty damn good looking. I can also afford one!

Hmm might get one as a Christmas present to myself.

I have friend who collects them, he has quite a few and uses them all.

Funny story; he and I were working in a nuclear power plant a few years ago and he was unable to get one of his watches out through the radiation monitors due to the radium dial. It took him a couple of days to get it back. Some of those watches are pretty hot.

First lesson. Do not buy a Rolex unless it comes from a dealer and you can actually touch it and look at to tell if it is real. I purchased mine and my wifes over in Europe at a dealer in Switzerland. Dont buy luxury iteams off of the ebay.

X2 on looking around local pawn shops, especially in your area.

I have a GMT II and wear it every day. Takes an enormous beating and still looks like new. You should have no qualms about wearing a later sports watch version to the job site.

I really dig the old explorers.

Yeah I might try the local pawn shops and Rolex dealer first. The Ebay thing makes me nervious, to many ways to spend $1k on a fake than end up with nothing.

I can't wear any watch on the jobsite, our subs are just keeping their heads above water. If I showed up with a Rolex the bills would go up 20% overnight!

So wear a Hamilton or Timex. A watch is a watch. It tells time now hot big of a money bag/ douche bag you are. If you want that then buy one of those big flashy watches.

Just to be a douche, I could say "a car is a car".

I sold my S600 and bought a '96 Civic. It gets me from point A to B, it drives ok and is safe. Now I'm a boring, cheap-arse.

Hatty,
If I was you I would look at Vacheron Constantin, Audemar Piguet (they supply movements for Tiffany&Co, Cartier and Bulgary), Montblanc and Chopard.... for the same money as an old Rolex you can have much more exquisite watch.
Rolex manufactured around 2000 pieces a day so every Tom Dick and Harry got one.... on the other side is Blancpain...the best there is: they produce around 10 000 a YEAR and every watch is made by a single watchmaker so the quality is outstanding.

Just my $0.02
