Plug is easy and cheap. Try this. Plug the boot onto the plug and ground the threads while someone cranks. If there is a blue flame, it probably isn't it.

Jlomon, when you're finished for the winter, and you've run all the fuel out of it, loosen the bolt that retains the float bowl and leave it that way. Now there will be absolutely no fuel in the carburetor to gum up over the summer. You may want to put a reminder on the gas cap to this effect.
