Let He Who Is Without Sin

8 Steps to Internet Unpopularity

From MacWorld:

After a particularly trying weekend moderating the Macworld forums, it occurred to me that there are a handful of ways to become an Internet pariah in a very short period of time. In the hope that you might not fall into some of these traps, allow me to enumerate those ways.

Here's the condensed list, read the link for the details:

1. Troll
2. Passionate cluelessness
3. Dispassionate cluelessness
4. Nitpick
5. Insult
6. The “Nazi” thing Godwin’s Law.
7. Promote your stuff. Endlessly.
8. Hold a grudge

My favorite:

I can’t recall the last time I saw a positive exchange of ideas result from one person calling another a moron, idiot, or worse. The difficulty is that most true morons, idiots, and worse fail to recognize the truth of these words and react by replying in kind.

If you crave popularity then these are important. Some folks have little wish to be approved by others as a source of self worth. Not saying I'm one of them, not saying that I think folks should use the above methods- but many folks think that what others think is more important than what you yourself think. That in itself is major part of the recipe for large groups of people to think and be influenced like a herd of lemmings. Could easily rename this: "How to stay in the herd and not risk ostracization."

This behavior is far more pervasive then you might realize. The entire escalation to larger houses and much more expensive cars is based upon keeping up with the Jones'. If they don't keep up...........and drive a 22 year old M/B..........the Jones' will think less of them..........and their fragile egos won't be able to withstand the onslaught.

Most of them will deny that this behavior exists.

I thought viagra fixed that whole "fragile ego" thing?

Personally, I would rather drive old cars and be able to buy the Jones.
