But to answer your question in a word, safety. Less US lives lost when you destroy major parts of their country and get them to surrender.

Seems to me like we have been trying to do it in Iraq and Afghanistan for years, the same way.

So how's THAT working out for us?

How so? Iraq and Afghanistan is NOT a glass zone at this time, is it? Tora Bora was not leveled, is it? We had commanders like Halsey who could say that they would only be speaking Japanese in hell. Today, we have that sensitivity crap. How is it similar? We could firebomb them into submission then. Today, we have to try hit the guy who is hiding behind what we THINK is a civilian. Tomorrow, he could pick up the AK-47 and be a soldier. Back then we knew who the enemy was.
