Who says guns don't make you stupid?

http://stats.sfgate.com/nba/front.asp

Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards (NBA) brought four guns into his locker room to help deal with some sort of gambling debt (allegedly). Mr. Arenas needs the cash, no doubt, onna account of his piddling salary.

He's been indefinitely suspended:

With each game he misses, Arenas will lose about $147,200 of the $16.2 million he will earn in the second season of a six-year, $111 million contract. The punishment came on his 28th birthday.

TheDon 01-07-2010 03:24 PM

well thats his loss.. He got greedy and pissed it all away

I don't think guns made him stupid. Celebrities think they can do anything, and get away with it.

Ask action hero-stud Wesley Snipes. He's still doing time for tax evasion, I believe.

Hatterasguy 01-07-2010 04:08 PM

Nah he was stupid before he had the guns.

Craig 01-07-2010 04:13 PM

Guns just allow stupid people to get into bigger trouble.

His stupidity, for want of less politically correct term has nothing to do with guns.

I guess just having them is stupid, right?

NY refuses to free Plaxico Burress on work release

http://d.yimg.com/a/p/ap/20100107/ca...qAWjkF6q2ggg-- AP – FILE - In this file photo of March 31, 2009, New York Giants football player Plaxico Burress leaves the …

By COLLEEN LONG, Associated Press Writer Colleen Long, Associated Press Writer – 19 mins ago
NEW YORK – Plaxico Burress is not getting out of prison just yet.
The work-release application for the ex-Giants star was denied by the New York Department of Correctional Services because of the nature of his crime. Burress pleaded guilty in August to attempted criminal possession of a weapon for having a loaded handgun in a nightclub that went off and shot him in the leg.
"At no time did you report this incident to local law enforcement. As such, it is determined that you must serve a greater portion of your sentence prior to consideration for potential participation in the temporary release program," the ruling said.
The program would have allowed him to spend some portion of his two-year sentence at home. The announcement was made Thursday.
Burress applied for the furlough Nov. 25, about two months into his sentence. Though he had no prior record, the decision wasn't a surprise; less than 5 percent of the more than 31,500 work-release applications in 2008 were granted.
Burress can appeal, and may also reapply for work release in six months. His attorney, Benjamin Brafman, declined to comment.
Burress, then a Giants receiver, was at the Latin Quarter nightclub in November 2008 with a .40-caliber gun tucked into the waistband of his track pants. He later said he was concerned for his safety because a teammate had been held up at gunpoint days before. The weapon slipped down Burress' leg and fired, injuring his right thigh.
The gun wasn't licensed in New York or New Jersey, where Burress lived, and his Florida concealed-weapons permit had expired. He also failed to report the incident to authorities.
Prosecutors argued the bullet narrowly missed a security guard.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. supported the decision.
"The defendant took an unholstered, loaded pistol into a crowded nightclub, accidentally firing it with one hand while holding his drink in the other," he said. "This extreme and reckless disregard for safety is what New York's gun laws were designed to prevent."
Burress is being held in protective custody at an upstate prison because of his notoriety. The Giants released him in April, but the 32-year-old said he hopes to resume his NFL career.

I'm sure some pro atheletes are plenty smart, it just is not required to be a great athlete.

Plaxico will be able to play again simply because he is one awesome athelete. Now if he keeps getting in trouble eventually he may run out of top job opportunities to choose from.

I think the NBA is a little more upset at the fact (alleged) that he took them into the locker room and allegedly pulled one or more of them on a team-mate. Arenas said it was a joke, a gag. To that sort of joke I would say: "STOP! You're killing me!"

MS Fowler 01-08-2010 07:13 AM

I think it goes much deeper than stupidity and guns.
Look at the graduation rates for the colleges that put many players into the pro ranks. Its around 50%. ( Yes there are exceptions, but rare--Notre Dame graduates about 98% of their student athelets, but then they aren't really competitve, are they.)
For many of these student atheletes, they are treated differently from childhood. They aren't required to do their school work, special favors are afforded them, abberant behavior is winked at.
And then we excuse behavior that would be crimminal for anyone else!

What would happen if you took guns to the cafeteria in your workplace?

This guy should be BANNED for lofe--IF the NBA were serious, but I think they like the gangsta image.

Carleton Hughes 01-08-2010 08:49 AM

It's some whack $h!t all right. That's why I hate hip-hop. The whole vibe and message is one of angry defiance, a glorification of MY EGO, as in the ego of the performer.

Did you look at the lead story in your link? The one about the woman who got her teeth knocked out and numerous other injuries from a homeless dude pissed cause she and her boyfriend had no cigarettes for him? And then the guy let out after a few weeks?!

A friend of mine sent me a DVD of the movie "Idiocracy." Semi goofy and somewhat heavy-handed satire but not w/o accuracy or value, IMO. Part of the premise is that dimwads are breeding like rabbits while more educated, perhaps more intelligent people postpone smaller families.

The heroes of the story accidentally get forwarded 500 or so years into the future where the results of the downward spiral are all too evident. The POTUS is the dominant ass whooping wrestler of the day.

I assume you are NOT a privileged athlete. I also see that you are in Amish country, so I assume you know about guns.

I was not speaking against gun ownership.
I was decrying the way pampered athelets disobey laws that would land any of the rest of us in jail for a very long time, and yet they typically get away with it.

cmac2012 01-09-2010 12:48 PM

I can see that firearms have a place in the world, at any rate, we're stuck with them and of course if only bad guys had them . . .

There's really no point in me slandering all gun owners. I'm not sure having a handgun on me 24/7 (were I in a C&C state) wouldn't make me a tad more stupid. Good possibility it would make me a bit less inclined to use diplomacy and my silver tongue to keep me out of trouble - instead I could easily jump to the thought, 'Oh yeah? Well Mssrs. Smith and Wesson here are of a mind that it would be a simple matter to drain a large quantity of blood out of your sorry carcass.'

t walgamuth 01-09-2010 02:59 PM

A good friend and small contractor that I know and respect very much has a son who has been a troubled young man. He has had various types of difficluties and used to work with his dad but that did not work out. One day the son decided he needed a large handgun. He had it in his jacket one evening when he decided it was a good night to get good and drunk at a local watering hole. He got into an arguement with another genius and soon the son was ejected from the bar. In the scuffle he pulled his gun.

Oops!

He was arrested, tried and did some time.

His dad was pretty much broken hearted over the deal.

I think the son eventually moved to NOL. Haven't heard from him for a while.

The dad is good as gold person but his personal life has been rough. In addition to this he had a child who od'd.

Craig 01-09-2010 03:58 PM

Based only on my personal experience, the people who most want to carry guns are the same people who I would prefer not have them. Just an observation.

Most cops I know, or knew, treated firearms as a tool; they weren't in love with them (i.e., they would complain about having to go to the firing range).

t walgamuth 01-09-2010 07:03 PM

Most police I have ever known are just fine folks. A few are kindof scarey folks who like the authority and uniform and so forth.

I generally agree with the possible exception of my home town, where the local police included a bunch of thugs. The police chief and his buddies were eventually arrested by the state police (this was many years ago).

Corruption happens....

Lafayette is a sleepy midwestern town but in the thirty some years I have lived here we have had a corrupt Judge who actually was buying stolen goods and had folks who would go steal specific things for him....(in jail or at least did some seriuos time)....

Recently it came out that an employee at one of the local hospitals managed to make off with 2 or 3 million over a period of a decade or so.

It is incredible to me how many embezzelers get off with light sentences and folks who are caught in a minor crime often get a really harsh sentence.

Heck we had a local fellow who drove a delivery van for, meals on wheels, IIRC, who ran over some ducks at the local city park (they are like feathered rats there anyway). The local judge gave him a pretty stiff sentence including IIRC some jail time....seemed to me like losing his job would have been enough punishment.

Sorry...thread drift alert!:P

Holy crap. Small fine should have been the max on that one. In Oakland, damned geese are out of control. Small lake in the town, Merritt lake, is infested with them.

Stoneseller 01-10-2010 06:51 PM

He did a dumb thing bringing the guns into the locker room.

He removed all doubt of the fact he is clueless when he did the hand-gunning routine on court.

Bye Bye multimillion dollar contracts. What an idiot.

Back to the original question....
What is the casue and which is the effect?

Do guns make ( some) people stupid?
or
Do (some) stupid) people "play" with guns?
or
Should athletes be held to the same rules as everybody else?

2. Absolutely.

3. Yes, but there is too much money involved to expect that to happen.

(wow, you watch fox news? i am shocked. :D)

anyway, back to the original thread, and its allegedly serious question.

no, guns don't make you stupid. (and trust me, i'm all for gun control, and would love if i could somehow prove and believe this - alas, i must be honest and say i can not. )

however, i do believe that mr. arenas, by dint of his actions, has made a very strong argument for greater gun control. even you diehard gun rights people can't believe that such a dummy should be allowed to own a gun?
please tell me why he should ever have that right, based on his actions?

I agree with him shooting the guy, up to a point. If there was a way to chase him away short of shooting him, I'd have done that. Either that or kill the guy, and that won't always happen. In this case, hate to say it, he better hope that guy gets life w/o parole. Cause pea brains can have a weird sense of revenge. Doesn't matter that he wouldn't have gotten shot if'n hadn't been breaking in. Criminals are not moral.

Either that, or I'd move and become very private on my address. You don't want some scum like that coming at you with a shotgun.

If someone I don't know, or wasn't invited, comes into my house, chances are they'll be leaving in a body bag, that's just the way it is.
