There's a guy up the street from me who dabbles in old VW's much like Tyler does Benzes. He had a powder blue Squareback with a surf rack for sale a couple years ago. Sadly that was when I decided to become financially responsible.

Thats what i call a nice one...

Theres a few of them in the samba forum... the last time I was in one was back in the 70s. The samba members don't seem to have too many complaints.

A friend of mind had one for a while. Powder blue, lowered and the whole interior redone with new upohlstery. The original FI was replaced with a pair of Delorto carbs. It also had the cylinders punched out to 2l with the open port heads and a scat cam.

It was surprisingly fast and reliable but it was reliable because he paid a lot of attention to it's maintenance.

I had one when I was in high school. I remember that the thing had Bosch fuel injection and an automatic. The damn car drove really well and had pretty good pep. I wish I had held on to it. The one I had rarely had any problems and was very reliable. Even with that ridiculous fuel injection system and the auto.

They really crammed the engine into that floor. I remember it being a SOB to do anything in there.

There was nothing good about that Omni...my dad went on to buy several watercooled VWs because he had enjoyed the Type I and Type III he had. The most vivid things I remember about the Omni was that all 4 outside door handles broke, more than once, when the car was nearly new, and the steering wheel vibrated so much at idle that he would pop it into park or neutral while stopped at lights. That car was just about dead at 60K miles.

The Type III has a cool dash with round pods for each instrument. My mom had a 64 Type I when I was really little, and that was cool too...white with red vinyl interior. I seem to recall that the Type III was bigger and had a lot of cargo room, relatively speaking.

At some point (when I have time to play) I'm going to get another bug, probably an early convertible. I had a '70 in college, but it was a POS and I was too broke to fix it.
