??? I don't see it. Many very poor countries top the list of arable land, and many very poor countries are also on the bottom of the list. I don't see the correlation at all.

They're poor because of a lack of a proper governing body to guide proper economic growth.

Look at most of Africa. Sadly it's the same deal. Blaming previous colonization is pointless. The people need to get with the picture.

Absolutely, it's because of their dictator-style government. The more governmental control and it's associated corruption exercised - the poorer the people.

A lesson learned in Haiti should be taught to anyone who craves more government in their lives. Hopefully more Americans will pay attention to Haiti's plight, thereby learning this.

jared is a bright boy, but he has a certain, limited approach.

fails to mention that independence in 1804 (?) was followed by continuing attacks and invasions, occupations, etc. , which have continued to this day, thanks to the IMF and the World Bank. thank milton friedman and the chicago boys too.

Contemporary China seems to disprove this claim.

Talking about this with a friend.
The DR and Haiti share an island, but that is about all. The DR was a Spanish colony, and Haiti, French. It was a slave colony, sort of a poor man's devil island. No one who was sent their lived very long. When the French left, there was no one remaining with any governing experience. Seems like the typical French pattern for colonies in the New World.

"Some," cannot grasp this.

Coincidently, I just finished reading "Collapse" again; he does seem to stress the environmental aspect of their problems, maybe more than he should. I think the reality is a little more complex than a single cause, but a corrupt government, overpopulation, and deforestation can't add up to anything good.

I listened to him when he was speaking at the School of Mines a few years ago. I agree that he is political naive in many ways. He should read the social ecologists.
One funny thing about that lecture at Mines; when the lecture concluded and I was trying to drive out those residential strees surrounding the school, it was the first time I had been stuck in a traffic jam composed entirely of Prius's except for my MB.
