I was simply offering a cheap shadetree alternative, and I got attacked on all fronts. This method works for me, and only requires 8 bucks and about 20 minutes of effort. If anyone else would rather pay $75 or more (I have no idea how much this actually costs) to have their system pressure tested go right ahead. But to suggest you are doing something illegal or harmful to the system by putting a can of R134A into it is simply silly.

Either way, the point is that you CAN use R134a to test for leaks in an R12 system without any ill effects. A/C shops commonly use a few oz. of R134a pressurized with nitrogen to test for leaks.
Wait a minute. I don't have a vacuum machine, and neither does anyone else that is doing an $8 elcheapo.

Then just take your car in to a shop as was suggested by others. This method won't work for you if you're not willing to make the effort to get the free rental from Autozone.

of course you don't want to tell Auto zone you mixed or intend to mix R 12 into the R 134 free machine by and pulling R 12 oil into a R 134 piece of equipment that you don't own means nothing really

you might have good intension's but you have to think FIRST - everyone is not as unfriendly to all our air - reasons for rules about things like this -

the guy with the problem should go to a shop and have them by the rules do a part evac and fill than when what is wrong is found make that determine at that time how and what to fix , just my take we have always tried to do what is expected by all when operating a shop - jz

Like I said, if you don't like my way, do it your way. It's a free country.

You're babbling now. Plus you're not free to break the law.

I have R12 and the components were designed for that, so I am prepared to pay the premium for it.

Since the AC compressor (apparently) has seized, and its stopped pulley killed two successive belts, I am figuring I will let a shop handle this and put in a NEW (not used or junkyard) compressor, and fix everything related.

..as a part of this, I figure to have (no choice but to) pay for a NEW complete R12 refill, whatever that costs.

Before the compressor seized up on me, my air conditioner worked PERFECT, so I assume no other service or repair other than a new belt for the compressor will be necessary.

But those Mercedes Benz compressors for the HVAC aren't cheap, for the entire job (west coast labor prices) I'd suspect $700 -$1500, as a WAG.

Right?

i picked up a 210 for my wife last year and the air did not work compressor had failed and i can buy wholesale MB - so it was still 475 ( i think ) for a re man / or new dont remember anyway

i ended up buying an e bay copy from a guy who had sold a couple of thousand of them all kinds of cars and he had 98 percent positive feedback i paid 249 for it and never looked back

lots of people told me they did not work - it took an hour to install its not a big deal but when you put a new unit in, the receiver dryer should also be changed, reason all the debris from the compressor going bad end up in it and its a filter soooo

R 12 in jersey has come way down from 2 years ago it should not cost over a 200 bucks to have it evaced and re charged if its the 91 car they make a conversion kit for it, it consists of screw on valves so the 134 will adapt a few o rings and oil and than Wal Mart has re charge 134 for like 20 bucks yea its 3 or 4 deg less cooling but jersey its never like Vegas - jz

thanks for the tips, especially about the receiver dryer, that makes sense.

Yah its the '91. The 08 Subaru Outback still is under a factory new car warranty, so all of that would be the dealer's and Subaru's job to fix, if it was that car..
