"anti-virus live" virus ... please, please help me kill it

So I seem to have acquired the rogue "Anti-virus Live" virus, or whatever it's called, on my computer. I've found several "how to" delete instructions online, and they're all different, most make no sense and they all tell me to download different spyware, which won't download on my computer.

Anyone think they can help me? I'm so mad right now I can barely function. I hate this kind of thing.

It attacked my work computer, and that computer never goes places it shouldn't.
My computer would not function at all. It reurned a file error message to any command.
The IT guy was able to gain remote acces, and repair it, The repair took him hours. I have no idea what had to be done.

Why cannot the people who launch these things be proscecuted? When the infection tells you to buy "protection" from a certain vendor or source, its like the mob telling you to buy protection from them. Shouldn't the vendors who sell the fix be investigated? They seem to have a rather vested interest in the issue.

It's a nasty one Bodhi. It inihibits any executable program from running hence it cripples your PC.

Malwarebytes should be able to stop it. First though, there is also a downloadable file from them that can kill the basic processes. It is called rkill.com. Try it, here is a direct download link -

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com

Just download to your desktop and run.

After that, download and install Malwarebytes.

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.htm

Then you will have to boot into safe mode and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from there.

It will be hard to install Malwarebytes if you haven't already, but just keep trying until it works.

Good luck!

Second vote for Malwarebytes, with an added step: go to a known clean computer and download Malwarebytes to a flash drive/CD/floppy.

Boot your infected computer into safe mode (if you can't get it to do that, there are steps to take to get there - I can look after doc's appt) and load & run malwarebytes in safe mode.

Good luck - if you've got what I think you have, it sucks. Just had to reformat & reload the OS on my home desktop because of it.

Thanks guys. I was able to download Malwarebytes onto the computer and run it in safe mode. It picked up several trojan and malware files and deleted them, and I'm not seeing any signs of the virus. What a PITA. It adds insult to injury that the little message the virus was popping up wasn't even in decent english. "Click here for the scan you computer." Appreciate the help ... hopefully the fix sticks!

Glad you were able to remove it.

I would also -

1) boot normally and run Windows Update until there are no longer any updates to be had
2) update the Malwarebytes database if you haven't already done so and do a FULL scan, not just the fast scan
3) ditto for your regular anti-virus software
4) check your Internet Explorer safety settings and restore to default settings or custom if you know what you want (and upgrade to IE 8 if you haven't already)
