What' the best antivirus software out there?

Hey Everyone,

My wife and I recently bought a new laptop computer. It comes with antivirus software preloaded on it, but I was wondering if anyone recommends any particular software over another. We've been running Norton 360 for the last couple years and have been pretty happy with that, but I was just wondering if there's anything else out there that I should look at before I take the plunge again with Norton.

Thanks, and yes I'll try posting a little more often.... :)

If you're using Norton 360 then you've just never come across a virus/malware yet.

Pretty much the only thing worth paying for to have on your computer is MalwareBytes. Don't waste your money on the resource-hogging/doesn't find anything norton.

Pawo obviously hasn't tried the latest iterations of Norton. I tried a trial and was very impressed. Still, I wouldn't pay much for it considering there are good free ones out there. Personally I use microsoft's own free suite and am happy with it.

I spend hours a day at work removing every form of virus/malware out there from people's computers.....I know what programs are worth having. Norton isn't one of them.

Vipre is good for an "antivirus" solution.....or AVG. Norton should be called "slow your PC down edition"

I have been running Windows Security Essentials, and have been fairly happy with it.

Looks and seems to be fairly low overhead, so I have been keeping it around.

Ditto on the Norton Thumbs down,
Vipre was spotty, a few machines great, a few it caused problems. Never really investgated once removed the problems went away.

I like Trend if you are going to pay for it.
MalwareBytes is a good free, AVG is another good free one.

I don't like it, but if you have ComCr*p they give you a free Symantec,
I have friends that are using it w/o issue

Again, try the new Norton, it is no more taxing than any other Anti Virus program.

I've just purchased Norton 360. My computer totally sucks now. Firefox keeps going into not responding mode.

I personally do not run any antivirus programs aside from the Windows Defender just because it is there.....and, I have yet to ever have a virus (or malware) on my PC's....just sayin'.....

Try AVAST! it is free.

also install superantispyware and malwarebytes' anti mal ware

its all free.
also use Fire fox browser.
That browser does a good job for me of keeping junk out like excessive cache and cookies. MS explorer lets all the junk in.

pawoSD 02-03-2010 10:12 PM

Avast is junk, it hardly finds anything of the modern malware....not even worth installing/running it. Same for spybot.

unkl300d 02-03-2010 10:46 PM

yeah but avast is an anti virus not anti malware software. That's why I personally use other antimalware softwares as a cocktail.
AVAST has done me good so far.... but its all an individual experience...:)

I'm with you.. I have Avast and Comodo.. I got hit once last summer with that "Win32 False Alarm" crap. Caught it on the spot...

True, but I only run my downloading of that stuff on a spare machine either running linux or windows in a virtual machine. :D Then if it gets an infection I can just wipe it out quick.
