Rant: I hate CNN

This is a rant which I am going to keep respectful. It has nothing to do with a "liberal/conservative" media bias and more to do with low quality reporting.

In the dining halls I listen to WKSU's feed of Morning Edition over my blackberry while CNN is on over the TV with closed captioning. It's strange, but the stories on both WKSU and CNN are exactly identical. They go in the same order when they're teasing them.

The difference in reporting is astounding. CNN not only sounds like it was written for a 3rd grade class, but most of the important details are missing from the stories.

To add insult to injury, on some days I get up even later and listen to the BBC's Newshour over top of CNN's closed captioning. The quality of reporting is even worse when comparing the BBC to CNN.

And finally I watched the Can America survive a cyber attack? special. Again, I see better reporting from my college newspaper and TV news show than on "main stream" media like CNN.

Thanks for hearing me out. It frustrates me when people use these news sources to make educated decisions. My complaints about reporting can also be applied to other news outlets like NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, etc.

Example of poor reporting between CBS and the wire service:

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSPEK9458120090310

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/03/10/world/main4855353.shtml

Notice the discrepancies between the two. Most notably that the Navy ship is used to find submarines. Reuters went on to mention about a Chinese submarine base nearby.

I've just given up on them and listen to NPR and the BBC when I get the chance.

you may not have been able to keep it respectful if you were to compare to FAUX News....

The worst part is they're all guilty of it to some extent, even my beloved NPR and BBC. The BBC reports on news stories in places that I will probably never visit in my life, so I don't know other sources to visit. News from say North America, Europe, or Asia can be easily be found from many sources so getting a rough idea of the situation is a easier.

Another pet peeve of mine is this one way conversation style ever anchor and journalist does. I want you to report to me what is going on, you're not in my living room so I can tell you why you're wrong so stop trying to sound like it!

Ok i'm done

Fox News has the lion's share of the market - evident in the behaviors of some of the marginalized minority.

CNN's market share is so low it's irrelevant. The other night their total national market share was less than 25,000 people watching - LOL!

Why should anyone care what the "tweets" or audience "posts" are on CNN or any other news outlet? The amount of time spent discussing those are annoying.

Fox News succeeds because they have an audience who likes what they say and how they say it; if they're the largest, then that should tell you something about the American people and their thoughts/opinions. CNN has the the smallest audience - for the same reason.

And before some of you start ranting about how I'm brainwashed by Fox because I'm too stupid to think for myself, I don't watch Fox, CNN, ABC, CBS, BBC, or MSNBC. I get my news online so I don't have to hear the sensationalism that now passes for "national news".

Try this one http://www.dw-world.de/

I remember one time sitting at the dealership for a few hours while waiting for something. They had a news network on (I forget if it was CNN or MSNBC) but for those few hours I swore it was the same report on the same 4 or 5 stories over and over again. I couldn't help but think to myself "There are 7 billion people in the world and you can only come up with 4 stories to broadcast?" Seriously......

This thread is enlightening. It's good to know that there are some people out there who feel as frustrated as I am.

I was unaware of Fox New's popularity. However mainstream media is a joke so I avoid it as best I can.

Mainstream cable news television is awful...the whole lot of them. CNN is gimmicky with their "technology", MSNBC and Fox are both quite dumbed down for the masses. It simply appeals to the greatest amount of people (I have spent quite a bit of time studying these academically, I'm a media studies guy). As far as ratings go, they are a bit misleading. Say you are conservative for argument sake - you have ONE option on cable news television if you want to wish to watch things you agree with, Fox News. Liberal viewers on the other hand have CNN, MSNBC, HLN (CNN, I know), and NPR. In terms of radio, the conservative talk show hosts typically rule but usually are syndicated on non-news networks. Simply put, there are less choices in conservative media so audiences are funneled into the few that are offered - resulting in higher viewer rates, which Bill O'reilly likes to brag about CONSTANTLY.

That being said, I think CNN is awful! NPR is usually my news source of choice, mainly because I can listen to it in the car--unless they have some stupid report on bat fungus or something.

Best advice is to ignore it if possible.. There's much more enlightening information to input your brain with than cnn. Turn it off, and log-on.

Most cable news sucks. I find MSNBC, BBC, and Al Jazeera to suck the least.

These days I don't want to just hear whats going on in the US, I want to know whats happening everywhere from a non American perspective. Al Jazeera is pretty decent for that.

if you have cable, try link-tv, they have dw (deutsche welle, in english) as well as various middle eastern resources and al-jazeera america.

(and yes, i expect some boos and catcalls. however, i read, watch and listen to a lot of sources, and don't trust any of them. )

and stick with bbc, npr, and cbc (we get that for one hour nightly here in l.a. on public radio)

p.s. as an old guy, its good to know of a young, inquiring mind out there.
