Not Political, but Political Correctness
Watched the old Slapshot movie last night.
Admitedly not a classic in the true sense of the word, but IMHO a classic movie that everybody should see. Add Kelly's Heroes, most Eastwood movie's, Melbrooks ... Ok I digress. In the original Newman riles the opposing goalie by yelling "Your wife's a Dyke ..." even uses the Dyke comment in the locker room when the team asks how he got him so riled. Last night, "your wife's a Lesbian", doesn't seem like much, but I felt it lost a lot in the translation. Whats your call ?? Should they fix up old movies like that, I'm even against the bleeping of the occasional naughty word, especially when it is used for effect and not to just have a naughty word in there. Pelham 123 is an example of excess as in all versions every 3rd word is F...

Network TV is a waste of time, find the movies on your cable "on demand" service, download them, or but/rent the DVD as a last resort.

Replacing parts of old films is a commercial decision. If the owner thinks it will make it sell better then that is up to them.
There could easily be two versions: The original and the 'current'. If it sells more DVD's then it will happen. |

I am all for getting rid of PC crap and having people grow a thicker skin and getting over it...
This is also like airbrushing out the TwinTowers from downtown New York City because having them in films might upset people. If people get upset - maybe they would DO something about it and not sit on their ample @sses...

In general I am not bothered by PCness. If someone is offended by a word or label I don't mind not using it if I am aware of it.
In the matter of older works of art or literature though I am not in favor of changing it. In Hemmingway's short story "The battler" (I believe I got that title right) Nick Adams is traveling by foot and on the railroad and comes into a clearing where two men are sitting at a campfire preparing to eat. The one is a retired boxer who suffers from taking way too many blows in the ring. The other man is his friend and protector a man who we now would call African American. In this Nick Adams story Hemmingway refers to himby his first name but describes his actions in this way..." he spoke in a smooth N*gger voice"..." he stood up with long n*gger legs". The reason I bring it up is that it is done in a way which clearly is not demeaning (IMHO) to the man, who is portrayed as a caring, generous and thoughtful man who takes care of the old boxer, protecting and respecting him and being that way to Nick Adams who is a stranger to him as well. I just thought I would mention it as it seems to fit into the discussion somewhere. In the case of work done in a different era with different moral codes, etc. I don't believe in changing the work of the artist to match current ideas of what is appropriate. Works that are demeaning to minorities or demeaning in general I will not be interested in partaking.

Words like the "N" word are only offensive because people allow them to be offensive. Point in case, in my High School back in the day we were having a serious problem with the "pissed off redneck" demographic using a certain "N" word to cut down the black kids. There were a good many fights over it. Eventually, my buddy Xavier (thats how he spelled it) came to me and asked for my help. He was a great big dude, and certainly didn't need any help kicking some ass, but he was in a predicament. Some of the honky kids had called him a N***** and he desired closure. Problem was, if he got in another fight he'd be off the Basketball team. I told him, every time one of those fat mouth breathing honky slobs calls you a N***** just do a "Ted Knight" laugh. (Go watch Caddyshack again, I'll wait.) Well, he did just that, and it caught on with the black kids at my school. The word N***** essentailly became useless there. Every time anyone tried to use it in a demeaning manor, the subject would just bust out laughing. |

Excellent!
Kudos to you for suggesting it and Kudos to Xavier, who was THE man to pull it off. With him doing it it gave the smaller less secure kids license to follow suit.

Yeah, those were good times. It probably helped that there was more weed in that school than in the entire country of columbia. Honestly, they'd bring in the K-9 to search, but it would just spin around in circles. I was pretty thrilled that my idea worked though.

Yea, I think I'm going to start a campaign against the "N" word.
Not that one, geesh, Nerds. I am one and take it offensively when anyone uses that term Let's see "Revenge of the computer literate" that sounds better.

Indeed, good job. Words like that, and the people that use them, have power over you only when you allow them to have that power. I got out of plenty of fights in high school by taking a similar approach. Whenever it got to the verge of someone wanting to get physically violent with me, I'd just lower my arms to my side and stand there, look at them and in a calm voice say "OK, you want to fight, go ahead, you throw the first punch". That usually brought things to an end for several reasons. One, they kneww damn well the first question out of a teacher's mouth would be "Who threw the first punch?". Second, there was the implied threat that if they didn't take me out with that one free shot, I was going to come up off the ground and kick the crap out of them - at 14, I was already 5 ft 8 and 160 lbs, rather big for that age in that era. Third, in a fight, the other guy is just as scared and afraid of getting hurt as you are - by just standing there calmly and inviting them to hit me, it rattled their cages - they were probably thinking "gawd, this guy KNOWS he can kick my butt, otherwise why would he give me a free shot like this?". That approach usually gave enough of a pause for the hormones to wear off and cooler heads to prevail.
