I spent 15 years in the F and B business, quite a bit of it running the beverage end of things. I would NEVER consider being an owner. If you are successful, it will be because the bar has become your TOTAL existence. Those show off owners who sit at the bar buying their friends drinks end up broke. As soon as the free drinks stop, their friends go elsewhere. Forget spending weekends tinkering with your old Benz. Forget your wife/girlfriend, unless you employ her, and then she'll leave you for some tatooed slime ball who hangs out in your establishment and has the best blow in town. Think about it very carefully. NOT a glamorous occupation.

Commerical real estate folks have a love/hate relationship with would be bar and restaurant owners. No matter how many businesses have failed in any given location, there's usually no shortage of tenants willing to have a go.

That seems like the least profitable way to be a drug dealer.

I know very little about business, but the attitude about not worrying about construction costs can't be right at all. There are still going to be subcontractors to pay, plumbing, hvac, electrical, on a commercial business you aren't going to be allowed to just do it all yourself and have it pass inspections, oh and materials, helll-ooo? A bar, a grill? refrigeration? Parking lot?

Banker's advise
I used to sell accounting services to restaurants and bars and I will never forget what a one banker told me about a just retired fireman with an inheritance who was about to open a bar:
"The easiest way to make a small fortune in the restaurant business is to start with a large one." Having said that; The successful restaurateurs I have seen open them up with a catchy theme, build up the business and then sell them.

ok ok more info. this is more of a "what the hell, we will figure out a buisness plan, but more likely not do it unless it seems cool and within grasp" idea. I currently work at a restaurant with a full bar. I intend to have NO food there. I was thinking more along the lines of an "old timey" bar theme, or a karaoke/ live music bar. as far as location is concerned, we haven't looked yet, but downtown seems like the smartest place for it. In no way is this a full out set to do plan. Just a fun little idea. and any mercedes enthusiast will get half off on all drinks

I don't really see how owning a bar is dealing drugs, nor would I be in this for profits.

Your COGS and labor for a bar is much lower than a restaurant. Most every place I worked has had a bar and a crooked bartender. In one place the bartender and the GM were the culprits, in another iit was the bartender and the owner's wife, you get the picture.

O and for the building itself. It would just be a renovation of the inside of an existing building. no new structures would be ideal.

do you know how much this pipe dream is going to cost you? It's not going to be cheap by any and all means.
Go to school, learn a trade, something and then build your dream... Thats what I'm doing |

Also from a business point of view the most successful bar owner will always be some one without any friends (they will always expect a discount or a freebie) and will be some one who never ever touches a drop of the stuff himself. In Europe you make more money from food than drink. So here at least you'd need to get a very good cook! |

I like the idea of buying something already established.
