Every semester it's always the same.

2.5turbo will know what I am talking about.

This is a rant !

Every semester during class registration I get Ffed over because of these "processing errors" I can register for 1 or 2 classes and then I start getting problems to register.

This semester I made sure I got into Advanced audio and New Telecomm. Two required classes for my major. I was also going to take Electro acoustic design, but I typed in the lab CRN number incorrectly ( I know my bad).

Well I got the error about registering for "required recital attendance" which is something I don't need. Anyway I dropped it and I started getting the processing errors.

I've called the registrar a ton of times and they're about as useless as the DMV. "Restart your computer, use IE or sarafi, connect over ethernet."

You seriously think that as an employee of our IT department for two fraggin years I wouldn't already be doing that?!

Ugh now I can't finish my comp sci minor because I couldn't enroll in my 171 (CS1) which conflicts with Electro acoustic's only two lab classes out of the three that are open.

Don't even bother asking for an over ride. God forbid that Rothbart would do something mildly helpful. Heck maybe even scheduling his labs at helpful times.

Since I'm going to be in Los Angeles in the Spring I can't finish my minor on time because 171 is a basic pre-req to get into the other classes I need to. I'm going to probably switch to computing technologies since I may be abe to finish with that on time.

Thanks for hearing me. I hate web based registration when the damn service can't handle all of the requests when we all sign on to register.

The best part those is I'm on time for my major requirements. Oh joy!

Yup that's the add/drop. And I thought I was cool because I have transfer credits that let me register a day earlier.

OK, here's how you had to register when I was in school:

1. Pick all the classes you want to take out of a big book that looks like a small town phone book.

2. Get at least 5 reg. cards and fill them out to create your schedule based on when the classes are offered.

3. Go wait in line to see a bunch of people sitting behind a bunch of card file boxes that represent every class in the school at every time offered.

4. As you see each person, they will give you a card for the class and time you request and then you move on to the next one. If there are no more cards, the class is closed.

5. If any of your classes is closed, you have to turn in ALL of the cards you were given, throw away the reg card and try another one.

6. Return to step 3 and repeat until one of the reg cards works.

Now, if you're lucky and you know someone sitting at the tables, they will give you a shout if someone returns a card for a class you want.

Plan on spending a good day for this process...

My kid is still deciding if he is gonna stay where he is or transfer. So he is basically registering for classes at two different schools. He just figured out how to game the system a bit and got registered for all the classes he wants at the school he went to in 08/09 but not 09/10. Had two holds he had to get killed (which he did). Since this will be his 4th year at college, he is getting pretty good at this. He started blowing up the phones in one office as soon as they opened, to get one hold fixed. called every three minutes until he got a human being on the line. I agree, colleges are run terrible. If they were a business, they would be out of business.

I know what you mean..

For fall I was having conflicts with my german class and a lab that had filled up so I had to pretty much wait until someone dropped out of my discrete structures lab.. and they did and I got in.

I also had to get three overrides for prereqs for classes.. I had to walk to the farthest parts of the campus for each of them. its crazy

Oh God! I am terrified of that. I don't get to register until the 21st. I hate it. I have to do what you do, pretty much. I went through ratemyprofessors.com because I did NOT want a repeat of last semester...where I got this horrible professor...sadly I did not know beforehand...I checked out her ratings, and they were incredibly accurate.

It is a MADHOUSE when we are trying to sign up. Everyone has different times, depending on the amount of credits we have, and it really doesn't help. The internet at our school is so slow already...when everyone is on the same site signing up for classes it is just a nightmare. I have seen scary things. One boy had a thing in his hand...could only get 1 or 2 classes and ended up throwing it and breaking it...and I was in the room with him. I was surprised he was being so angry. But then it was my turn, and I felt his pain.

I made out this perfect schedule, and every once in a while I keep checking to see the classes and times I want...and the spots slowly dwindle away.

I FINALLY picked a major that I want to get into, and I really need a certain one of these classes. Luckily, my advisor told me that if I do not get in the class that I REALLY need, he will try and get me over ride.

Yes, web registration definitely sucks...best of luck to you to getting everything else, and somehow, getting your minor done in time!

I generally haven't had too many problems registering for classes here...but I have heard horror stories about registration. Probably the biggest issue I had was getting into Drama Lit last year; my advisor forgot to pre-register me in the class so I had to take Shakespeare which I really didn't want to take. Most of my classes have been in Dillingham so if there's an issue it pretty much means filling out an override and I'm set.

I know registration here has been bad for you...getting booted out of sound design this semester and now this. If it makes it any better, Don didn't feel all that great about having to kick people out.

Evan - the mad dash to the registrar has been replaced by getting on the registration page at 7:00:01AM and typing in all the course numbers as quickly as you can and submitting it before the server gets overloaded with other people registering. One time I had to wait for a good 30 seconds for the server to get back to me after submitting all my classes.

I'm in the same boat as Justin...I'm outta here in May!

Don's great and I completely understand why the dean's office had to do that. I knew going in it was a long shot so

But really my comp sci minor is screwed. I won't have enought time to finish it so I have to switch to this computing technologies thing which is just college speak for I can use programs like flash and 3Dsmax.

Well talk to Rothbart and see if he'll override you into the lab you need, if you haven't already. He might do it considering the circumstances. I'm in his DSP class this semester if you need me to pull for ya

Sounds like on line registration really blows.
Back in the day I very purposely took a work study job working for the school's admin. office. After a couple of semesters among other things I was working registration.... Took a leave of absence at one point, and had all of my classes locked up for my final year before I left on leave.
