Question about spark plugs.
What wears out in a spark plug exactly?
Is the life of the spark plug a function of how many 'sparks' or something else?

The electrode wears out, it is a function of time, as well as how well your engine runs. If you're too lean, they get too hot. If your engine is too rich, they foul out. Thats also a function of whether or not you have the right heat range. If you're running the OEM plug in an OEM running car, they should last quite while. But if its like my truck and takes Champion plugs, they get replaced whenever they are on $.99. The 3800SC which takes $9 iridiums gets them less frequently lol.
Before someone else says it, this question is pointless, as real Mercedes don't have spark plugs.

On new vehicals they last damn near forever. I don't have to change them on my truck to 100k miles. Even at 100k miles a lot of guys are pulling them and finding them to be perfect, some go 150k on them.

For how cheap plugs are if they aren't iridium and how few you need. I don't see a need to drag them out to 100k. Now if you have like a Benz V12 with dual plug and it takes $10 plugs. Yeah, I'd probably hold off haha.

I think the plugs in my truck are iridium.
On the GM's at least when people pull them at 80k-100k they look fine and the gaps are fine.

The Vortec is similar to the LSx AFAIK, I beleive you are correct on the iridiums.
