An update on Earl.....

By Tuesday afternoon, Earl was looking a lot better and had started eating. They've got him on valium every couple hours to keep him calm and control the withdrawal affects. Nurses rated his condition as 'surprisingly good considering.'

Yesterday he was stronger in the morning, but in pretty rough shape by the afternoon. Doc summed things up as Earl being on his on personal roller coaster from hell - that he's going to cycle up and down and they're going to do the best they can to tailor his drug cocktails to control his symptoms (more for his safety than for his comfort) as his body and brain thrash around establishing a new 'normal.'

Earl's son and daughter have been in to see him, and a buddy he's known since he was 8 has pretty much been at the hospital whenever he isn't at work. No clue yet on how long Earl will be staying in the ICU, or where he'll go next.

Back when I was living in CT, I moved in next door to a guy recovering from a very serious heart attack at about 47-48years old. He was a mechanic, and parted cars after work for his beer/smoke money. Well, he never smoked again after his heart attack, and later quit drinking on his doctor's advice. You could tell it really sucked for him, but people sometimes do wake up when given the choice between living and dying.

Ditto a younger Brother (heart attack @ 47-48 yr. old) with the exceptions of he has accellerated/increased his drinking/tobacco use/weight gain. As if it's a race to 'the hereafter.' He'll be gone soon I'm afraid....

I've known several people who crawled into a whiskey bottle and couldn't stay out for any length of time. Addiction is a scary thing, I commend you for trying to help this man.
