I never did like those types of mattresses that conformed around you, I know what you mean. I used to sleep on the hide-a-bed on a 15+ year old couch. I threw some plywood under the mattress, threw a thin memory foam top on it for some added comfort. BAM. Amazing bed. All my friend thought it was cozy and wanted to use it when they stayed here.

Now, I'm on a regular matress/boxspring. There was a frame, but it died. The wheels bent out from under it. It was a piece. Soon after the mattress started to cave in where I slept. I ALWAYS sleep in the same place. I don't move much once I'm asleep. I ended up throwing a 3/4" piece of plywood under the mattress to make it livable again.

Come to think of it, this might be a Sealy...

In one of my recent Consumer Reports they cut apart a bunch of mattresses, from cheap to expensive, and their conclusion was that it didn't matter what you buy as long as it's comfortable for you. Results on memory foam and sleep number were inconclusive - about half the owners liked them, the other half didn't. The bottom line is to try a mattress before you buy it. You must lie on it for 15 minutes before your body relaxes and you are able to gauge if you really like it.

We ended up with a $300 Serta queen size firm mattress from Sam's. They have more expensive models, but they are pillow top which neither my wife nor I can stand. And yes, similar mattresses go for $1800 or more at the mattress stores. It is indeed almost all markup!
