Heading to New Orleans Monday :-)
Well I am going to be on assignment for the Feds in Nawlins for the next two months or so.
I will be staying at the Omni downtown Any of you live in the area? Where to go? What to do? What to avoid? I am going to bring the wifey down for at least one weekend. WOO HOO! Can't wait to get there :-)

Oh!!! Do me a huge favor and check out The Sweet Olive B&B {linky here}.
When Darling Wife and I met in person for the first time, we'd planned to boogie on down to Nawlins for a week and get to know each other. Were gonna stay at the Sweet Olive (run by a couple of wonderfully nice guys). Pesky little storm called Katrina beat us there, so we had to change plans. We moved her to CA instead, so it all worked out but we're planning on getting there at some point.

I heard stories about that too!
I am wondering which places are worth going to and which ones to avoid at all costs. I was already told that the area between the hotel and the facility is a no-man's land... I figure post Katrina the place has changed and I wanted a fresh view of the city...

Coop's place on Decatur St. Great food, real atmosphere, reasonable prices.

I will be at the Omni Royal Crescent Hotel at least for this week.
The government rate is published and every hotel from a 5 star palace to the Super 8 charge the same for a room!

If you go when it's busy, bring extra people to hold the spot in line while you have a drink next door.

Being on the streets at night, or walking with your spouse - and no other people are present on your stretch of sidewalk. Especially after dark.
If you're walking the streets of the CBD (Central Business District) in New Orleans, and you're the only ones on the sidewalk - you are at risk for a mugging whether you realize it or not. Day or night. The only safety net in the CBD is in numbers of other people immediately present at your side on the entire stretch of sidewalk. Similar to parts of Manhattan in NYC. Much of New Orleans proper, is the only city I travel to regularly, where I realize there are no completely safe sections to be in. I spend my nights and days predominantly in the suburban cities of greater New Orleans, on the eastbank - some areas of these suburbs give me a feeling of uneasiness too. The Omni is a decent hotel, but it wouldn't be my top choice. Last edited by Skid Row Joe; 08-06-2010 at 12:41 AM. |

^^ Not MY Idea to go in August! I spent time in Houston in July/August and I bet it is similar. ...

New Orleans harbors the rancid smell of refuse at street level in the summertime - no way around that. The stench comes and goes as you walk the sidewalks - especially in the French Quarter, where buildings hug the narrow streets, and garbage is collected from the front of the businesses. The humidity level especially in the mornings, can be counted on as consistently worse than Houston - to a small degree.
Houston's humid air may or may not have the smell of refinery in it's summertime air. Last edited by Skid Row Joe; 08-07-2010 at 01:33 AM. |
