Hartford is just awful. I spent 20 years of my life about 5 min from it and still won't go into the city unless I absolutely have to. I'd rather drive down to New Haven. Case in point - I remember seeing an episode of "Gangland" where they profiled a Hartford gang. In the background of a number of the shots was the building where I work when I go into the office

I mean, I wouldn't choose based on dunkin donuts, but I see the appeal of picking location based on what is near it.

It was pretty scary recognizing some of the streets that were being listed as the most violent....

They're trying like hell to develop the area around the Convention Center, mainly the Front St. area. Obviously not the best time for development or finding tenants, but I guess you need to start somewhere.

Hartford will always be hampered by I-91 cutting off the riverfront. They (the city and state) like to compare Hartford with the other cities throughout the U.S. that have had a revival of sorts (with varying degrees of success) via developing near the waterfront (Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinnati, San Antonio-[not really much of a river but...], etc). But the one thing all of those places have that Hartford doesn't is direct access to- and bars/restaurants and shops along the water. I-91 and the dike are so close to the river bank that development is near impossible especially given the spring flooding. The only thing they can really do is build over top of 91 (making the existing highway into a tunnel rather than burying it a la Boston's Big Dig fiasco), like they did with the park and amphitheater area and putting in some restaurants/bars and shops along the edge.

Until then, the most high profile waterfront tenant will be the trash-to-energy plant and its "it doesn't smell" smells.

Oh yes, even was a child I remember hearing the nightly news reports about shootings in Hartford.

New Haven is a hole, too. Except for Wooster St.

I go to Boston more often than Hartford or New Haven.

...at the Arena at Harbor Yard.

My FIL goes to the Bluefish games quite a bit.

Gangs pretty much run Hartford these days, and there is a strong presence in the suburbs too. You could say the same about any city though, last year I lived a couple houses away from a bunch of members from a well-known gang here in Philadelphia. They were actually pretty nice guys, they used to shovel our sidewalk and stuff in the winter, I never had a problem with them. But again, I am getting off topic a bit.

I'd take New Haven over Hartford any day. When I was in high school my band used to play tons of local shows, I saw some pretty bad **** happen in Hartford a couple times just outside the Webster. As hard as they try, they won't be able to revive Hartford - as Swamp said it just isn't built right. Never mind I-91, there is practically NO public transportation aside from the dismal bus service, no parking anywhere unless you dish out some serious money. I was amazed when I came down here that you could pretty much get anywhere taking trains and subways.

Ok just got back with (ANOTHER) new radiator and it's installed

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this one doesn't leak as well.

Oddly enough while driving into said city just now I was tailgated constantly from the moment that I drove in.....

Hartford is a working city for large companies, not a living city. People who work there usually don't live there.

Mike said it, only those who can't afford not to live in Hartford. Its never going to be that nice.

Bridgeport OTOH is pretty much a 3rd world country. New Haven is hit and miss, although I do enjoy it.

Bridgeport used to have a good industrial base until after WW2 when all the factories packed up and went elsewhere. Now it doesn't really have much in the way of large employers.

Thus Hartford without the insurance companies is like Bridgeport and New Haven without Yale is also, like Bridgeport.
