I was an atheist who used to think that a command based morality of right\wrong really existed. I now realize that commands require a commander so without God, there is no morality. However, life without morality isn't so bad after all.
No idea about the numbers of atheist ammoralists. My reply: Who decided that morality requires commands?

I prefer a simpler(?) explanation, what we call morality is nothing more than a set of behaviours favored by evolution because they are successful. Individuals and groups that tended to perform "immoral" acts had less chance of reproducing and had less contribution to the gene pool. At the other extreme, individuals and groups that were "too pacifist" also did not survive. What results are the current social norms, codified by various religions as "morality." Obviously, this is an ongoing process and there are still differences in these norms between cultures and associated religions. These differences will continue to be reduced in the modern "smaller" world.
