Stink bugs

are driving me crazy

They first ruined my tomato crop almost 2 months ago.
Nasty buggers apparently stick their pointy little nose (technical term unknown) into the 'maters while green, causing uneven ripening & premature rotting on the vine.

Today, the south side wall of my house was covered with what seemed like hundreds of the little buggers. Every time I open a car door, they seem to home in on the opening. Same for opening the patio doors. This friggin things are out of control.

Last year was pretty bad. This year is crazy.

Just saying.

Tell me about 'em. I live not far from "ground zero", where they first turned up about 10 years ago. They're anxious to get shelter for the winter right now so any little crevice is attractive. Today the buggers figgered they can crawl through the brush seal on the side of a screen door, so now I've got to keep the weather door closed.
Anyone that comes up with a trap to keep them off the veggies and outta the house could make a lot of money.

They're all over the screens trying to get in. And they really do stink when you kill em.

Some years the ladybug population seems to explode right in my own back yard, and they find there way inside with the greatest of ease. They tend to end up in clusters in the upper corners of each room. The cats find them quite entertaining, and my wife loves vacuuming them up.

The stink bugs don't get inside in large quantities. I do know last year they virtually completely clogged the screen behind my attic gable vent. I've not been into the attic yet this year.

Correction to OP, they are all over the North / NW wall of my house.
I'd like to take a flame thrower out there, but that might be a little dangerous.

Beg to differ with you on that one. We got 'em inside the house by the tens of thousands. At this point, there's an hour every couple days with the shop vac sucking up the filthy little bastages.

Lost over 300 pounds of tomatoes, all our corn, most of our okra, peppers, and tomatillos. Apparently, they don't care for strawberries. Go figure.

Found out a couple weeks ago they're 'highly attracted to yellow' - as some will recall, our house got painted a bright, screaming yellow recently. Lovely.

This time of year I usually apply permethrin to areas where fall home-invading insects in my area (cluster flies, box elder bugs, Asian lady beetles) congregate on my house. I also apply it under eaves, around windows and at other spots where they might gain entry. It seems to help keep them at bay in the home.

Permethrin acts as a broad-spectrum insecticide as well as a repellent, but is reasonably non-toxic to most mammals and birds. Farmers use it in the barn, and it's used in treatment for head lice. It is highly to toxic to cats and aquatic life, though.

We have a different variety here in the desert. They're shiny black and when threatened stick their backsides up in the air preparing to spray you like a skunk. They don't bother anything and the chickens love to dig up their larvae, which are fat and juicy. I grew up calling them "Pinacates", their Mexican Spanish name. The old folks believe it's very bad ju-ju to kill one, we leave them alone as they're never many in number. Japanese Beetles, on the other hand, are dying on the porches in hordes this time of year. The chickens clean them up too. Good chickens!

The stink bugs that I remember when I was a kid was the ones that when you stepped on them use to crunch like lobster shell and then stin to high Heavens.

I did a load of laundry this morning and was suprised by all of the rattling in the dryer exhaust pipe when I turned it on. Might be a good thing to run the dryer for a few seconds a day to flush them out of the vent until the weather turns colder and they are gone.
