Don't forget the rapidly disappearing family farm

I know, old song. Still a serious issue. Stuff like what happened to small farmers makes me hate all politicians and large corporations....

Sadly, that's how I make my living. Most of what I do at my shop is making auction signs and brochures. I would rather pay more for my food so the farmers can make a living.

The entire US/EU agricultural policy is a disaster; they are depressing the entire world food marker by controlling the prices of there own products (mostly due to trade balance considerations and domestic politics). The result is that the developing world can't compete in the open market, the US/UK have to pay huge amounts of farm welfare to there own big ag businesses to keep prices low and the independents get squeezed out.

And when the US providers can bring it in from out of the country for far less...

Hence why we buy fresh at local markets and there’s not a chance in hell you’ll find a green giant can in our pantry.

I buy local when I can, as the descendant of past farmers and relative of current ones, it's the least I can do.

Buying local is usually a better value anyway. It makes no economical/social/environmental sense to ship food long distances.

I don't know about that. I have seen the pricing and quite often, it is higher than the supermarket. Way less convenient too unless you are a 1 item shopper. Taste wise, in a blind test, I don't always seem to be able to tell the difference. Like say Diet Coke and regular Coke, I can tell the difference in any taste test. Last few times I bought local, I couldn't really tell unless the wife told me. Sometimes I seem to be able to.

American microbreweries make the best beers I've had, personally.
