ive had my cars broken into on the driveway twice, last time they got 2 brand new dewalt 18v batteries . I got a motion sensor light with a tap for an extra light. I wired the tap to a doorbell transformer and then ran that low volt line to a small buzzer. Now when the light trips it buzzes and wakes me up, I have the light timed to reset very quickly and if its someone not supposed to be there it will continue to trigger and I can check. It picks up wind blown leaves sometimes but the buzzer is not that loud so I can live with it

I have a GE Security NX-8 alarm system in the garage. It's around $100 plus whatever sensors you want to use. It acts as both fire and burgler protection and it may save you some money on insurance too.

Our's is set up to be monitored by the same company that monitors the home system and when it calls, it just appears as another alarm zone to their panel so there's no extra charge for monitoring.

I installed and programmed the system by myself.

I once electrified a garage door with an electric fence transformer. Easier said than done but my tester did measure 5kv from the door to ground. No one ever tried to break in again.

I now use the "live in a nice neighborhood" method. We don't have any problems anymore. I do keep a .45 handy just in case

I had to insulate the garage door from the wood framing of the garage in order for it to work. I also had to insulate the bottom of the door where it sat on the concrete. It's amazing how easy high voltage can find a ground.

I had a friend who was willing to "test" the door for me but I said at that voltage he was probably going to poop his pants. Plus it would hurt really bad. He then decided against it.

One thing I didn't know was the fence transformer pulses at about one "jolt" per second.

I know about 'em...I'm installing one at one of my transmitter sites now due to cows coming up to the heat-exchanger during the evening hours and pushing it around while they crap all over place and fight each other for the "warm spot" near the unit. All the cow/person gets is a quick *ZAP!* and it's all over with...nothing that causes a "death grip" clap-down on the wire if you're dumb enough to grab it.

It does, HOWEVER, provide a POWERFUL PETER-SCHRIVELING PUNCH if you manage to hit the fence with a stream of own body-fluids. My brother learned that lesson the hard way. You should pee only on the wood post and NOT spray the stream around like you're signing your name in the air. THAT will get you knocked on your arse and then "you're all wet" as the case may be!

( He still blames me and I wasn't anywhere near him! It's probably because I laughed so hard and could still walk!!! He couldn't have caught me if I had been knocked out and in a daze...he wasn't "dancing" too well for a while! )
