I'm reading HG Well's "War of the Worlds" and early on in the book he uses the term "Extra-Terrestrials". Made me wonder if that's the first time the term was ever used in literature. Maybe even if Wells invented it. As opposed to more specific terms such as "Martians", "Moon-men" "Venusians" etc. Any body have any idea?

As far as the original thread question, it may very well be the first use of the term. HG Wells seemed to have a knack for foretelling future events thru his fiction. The story is, when asked what he wanted as an epitath on his tombstone, he retorted "Damn you, I told you so!"

Interesting. I couldn't access the online version, you have to register. But I tried various other online dictionaries and the oldest reference for it was claimed to be 1848, though no source or publication was mentioned. War of the Worlds was published in 1898 so it's possible it was in use before HG Wells used it, though thus far the information is inconclusive.
