I have been without a decent camera for some time now. Had a D60. Today I bought a D3100.

It not professional by any means, but it will work for me. I am surprised how small the body is compared to the D60, probably my only complaint about it. Otherwise its a nice camera.

But I also need to now buy a 10-24mm lens which went by by with the D60. I love the wide angle look. Very much "Top Gear" style actually.

It also does HD video and it does it well, but easier to manually focus. A photo camera is just not fast enough to be a "real" video cam.

Any other camera guys here?

I have a D5000, very similar to yours. I'm more of a B&W film guy, but I'm learning my way around Photoshop.

A 10-24 lens is pretty wide on a DX format camera, about 7-16 in terms of 35mm, how flat is that lens?

I shoot Canon.. Everything is backwards on a Nikon. I wish I had money for a T2i or even mega money for a 5DMKII

It's pretty hard to switch back and forth; I've been shooting nikons since the 80s and have a bunch of manual bodies and lenses, my problem is getting used to exposure and auto-focus control on digitals. I'm finding that I need to turn the ISO way down and shoot in manual mode to get any control.

Yeah, once you pick a brand you just stick with it since lense mounts havent changed much.

I only use manual when I am doing night/long exposure or feel like it. Otherwise its Av or Tv...I've never used greenbox and if I am feeling lazy I use P.. No RAW when using greenbox.

I have photomatix pro 3.3 for HDR stuff but I have yet to use it lol. I need to get out and do more photo stuff. I really want a wide angle lens.

I do wish I had a 70-200mm 2.8L but jeeze they have gotten up there in price(1900!).. I'm happy with my 70-200mm F4L that I got for $300(only used once)

the 10-22mm canon lense is like $720 but I've heard good things about the other brands. Same thing for the 100mm macro lens. Thats all I want the 10-22 and the 100mm macro and I'll have a good set to go with my 50mm F1.8mm ... Sure I could have spent $300 on the f1.4 but the 1.8(only $99) is just as buttery with the bokeh as the 1.4



Do you put UV filters on your lenses? I do just to protect the glass from anything.

That's a nice photo. Good lenses are expensive, especially fast ones. I haven't gotten to the point where I'm willing to spend a lot of money on digital lenses yet. Actually, I'm still trying to decide if I should buy a full frame DSLR instead of my DX format. I've been shooting everything in RAW and running it through Photoshop. I do keep UV filters on all my lenses for protection.

Full frame is awesome. Plus the camera wars aren't about megapixels anymore, now its about ISO. the 5DMKII is awesome in low light conditions.

As is the T2i. But full frame is just the best. You get full range with your lenses. I like knowing that a 10mm on a full frame is 10mm, not 16mm on my crop body.

Yup, it's just a matter of whether you can justify the cost difference of both the body and the lenses. I'm just reluctant to buy many lenses in the smaller format until I decide I'm going to stick with it. Also, all my film lenses would be easier to use on a full frame body.

50mm F2.8 RAW B/W conversion

Cool, I've never owned any really wide lenses; my widest is a very flat 24mm manual. One of these days I should pick up something with some curve, I like that effect.

It's tough to beat a fast 50mm lens to get some depth, I really like B&W portraits. For a while I was playing around with hand coloring B&W prints with oils and pencils, it's lots of work and my wife is better at it than I am.

My biggest problem is time.

Its really nice. Its cropped. Works well, great photos.
