Prop 19: what happened californians?

I was under the impression that this was a clear shot win. Any reasons why it failed?

Darn it TX, you beat me to it. I was going to point out that they were still piled up in bed with their "prescription."

some comments from Californians:

The central valley prefers meth.

====

The cartels are thrilled.

===

"The risks of legalizing a drug for the first time was too scary for people." Really? What about alcohol - last time I checked, people who abuse alcohol do some crazy, crazy stuff.

====

I had a hard time voting for it (I still did) because I know of the legal mess it would have caused, every city and county would have had their own laws. Could you imagine how confusing that would be? I have a feeling that got a lot of people who were sitting on the fence.

In general, the proposition system is not meant to address criminal code. Unfortunately, I think it is something that should be picked up by the legislature. But, since it is a hot potato, that might not happen any time soon.

You also can't call this a "resounding" defeat. If only 5% of voters (1/20) voted differently, it would have passed (yes, I know it lost by 10%... just do the math).

IMO, it's only a matter of time. Would this have even gotten 25% of the vote 10 years ago?

====

To be fair it is time to make alcohol and tobacco off the market! The real killers!

====

A good day for organized crime, north and south of the border. But it is consistent with the rest of the voting results: California is doomed.

====

People driving stoned . . . are you kidding me? How about the people driving on xanax, prozac, oxycontin, percocet, paxil, zoloft, etc . . . takers do not call these legal prescriptions "happy pills" for nothing. I begrudge those takers nothing but do not tell me what I can smoke, who I can screw and what I can grow. Contrary to "spirits" marijuana does not debilitate one physically. A person accustomed to the effects is not discernible from a distilled water drinker. Does anyone see the medical marijuana community driving around stoned, laughing it up, running into people. Not hardly - opponents have not a shred of legitimacy to their argument. More people died from eating potato chips last year than smoking pot. In fact no person in history has ever OD'd from pot. Reeeeeefer Maaaaaadesss!
People in jail over a plant - you gotta be kidding me - the only madness is the financial travesty called the war on drugs. Opponents - do some research and get your facts straight....

====

I told you so. I told you Prop. 19 would fail.

California voters are afraid of "confusing tax laws" and are absolutely certain that EVERYBODY will be driving and going to their jobs STONED.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg of the voters' paranoia.

====

Time to tax the cr@p out of alcohol and artificially push it's price up 2-3X. How do you like them apples?

====

The next time you read about Mexican cartel violence, the next time you read about a state park polluted with pesticides from a grow site, the next time you read about a lack of state funds... Remember that if you voted no on 19, it is YOUR FAULT.

=====

Looks like my decision to hand out reefers on Halloween night was a little premature. Sorry, kids.

====

Does anyone else see the irony here?
The people that voted in favor - basically a vote for a states right over the fed, are the same people that vote for politicians that favor federal gov. control over them.

The chicken voting for Col. Sanders.

lol

===

Another big victory for ignorance, bigotry, and the American Taliban. America, including California, remains a very, very backward country.

===

Who cares? Me and my pipe are SOOO above the law.

===

I like marijuana and fully believe that it's less damaging to the human body and mind than alcohol, but anybody willing to look at Proposition 19 objectively--objectively--could see that it was a very poorly written piece of legislation that left more questions unanswered than answered. Perhaps if the Pro legalization camp would rectify this situation a much improved, well written law could be passed in the near future. Seriously, just because it WILL happen eventually doesn't mean that we as a state have to settle for shoddy legislation.

====

Nothing changes. Drug dealers will still sell pot. Illegal growers will still grow it and make huge profits. Mexican drug cartels won't worry about being put of out business by legal growers and sellers. It will still be unsafe for law abiding citizens to hike or camp in our national and state forests. Federal, state and local police will still spend many millions of our tax dollars raiding pot farms throughout the state. All of this continues thanks to California voters.

===

I'm proud that voters exercised their right to say "NOT IN MY STATE!" to the pot apologists, addicts, and dealers.

===

This sucks. Especially that it was a solid margin.

But in the end, marijuana legalization will prevail. You just can't beat shifting demographics and common sense.

===

listen you potheads, decriminalization is good enough!

===

It's essentially legal now. I buy a travelers ounce at a time from a good source at likely far below a taxable cost. I risk less than a parking ticket. The worst thing that could happen to me would be for government to get involved. I prefer their current stance of uninvolvement. Best all around answer.

====

The medicinal marijuana industry spread a lot of lies and hyperbole about this law solely because they stood to lose money. And the fear of big commercial operations taking over is BS because its still illegal under federal law so there is still plenty of reason to fly under the radar. And screw the pot growers anyway, everyone else has to compete with the "big guys" in their respective industries. As far as i'm concerned, i hope phillip morris comes in and undercuts these guys out of business. THe price of weed may actually be representative of its intrinsic value and not just inflated risk-premium.

So they need to just keep charging and putting people in the system-ruining their lives for what they will not stop doing anyway -which is no worse that having a beer?

3 strikes and your're out -does that also count on BS misdemeanor crimes like this in CA. how much is costing the bankrupt state to keep handling?

The Nutmeg, who spent $140,000,000 to try for a $174,000 job, would have been far far worse.

Some former eBay executives believe that her personality, and the way she conducted herself as CEO, are in fact a poor match for a brutal political job like being the governor of California.

“She's a pretty typical CEO, the kind who says jump and waits to see how high. She also doesn't look for input because she prefers to make snap decisions. She makes clear that she doesn't want meaningful input from other people,” said Reed Maltzman, onetime director of business development and strategy for eBay, who worked closely with Whitman in her early years at the company.

"Being politic is a skill, and quite useful in the realm of politics. Do I think she would be a good governor? Unequivocally no, ” said Maltzman. “People are afraid of her. I’m afraid to talk to you. The reason I am talking to you is that I love California."

“She makes up her mind on as little information as possible to get to the conclusion she wants,” said Brad Handler, eBay’s associate general counsel and director of law and public policy from 1997 until 2001. “She does not move off her position once she has staked it out. She does not tolerate dissent. She had no interest in government while I was there. She operates like one of the boys in an old boys’ network. She gets people who are extremely loyal to her, surrounds herself with that bubble, and that is the only information she wants to hear.”

A number of other employees who agreed to speak on the condition that they not be identified painted a similar picture.

One employee vividly recalls a late-2006 meeting about potential candidates for a job opening at eBay that left her physically afraid of Whitman.

“Are you f**king kidding me with this s**t?” the eBay chief executive screamed at the executive recruiters who were on the phone, the employee recalled. Whitman was angry because a candidate was not being brought in for an interview. “Do I have to f**king do everything myself? What is wrong with you people?”

The recruiters tried to placate their powerful client, explaining again that the executive was on the verge of accepting a new post elsewhere, according to the staffer. But Whitman would not be consoled. “I don’t want to hear these f***ing excuses. I don’t need this f**king s***.”

Because the conservatives who want small and less intrusive government only want that small and less intrusive government when it suit them.
