Just got back this afternoon from BB, they said they sold the 2GB 2 packs (2 1GB sticks) for the same price I paid for the 1GB DDR1, so hell, I just swapped with them even up. So they're installed now, no problems but unsure if it's really sped anything up as yet. Maybe a little.
It's running 32 bit, so info I heard so far says it won't utilize anything over 3GB, I am at 2.5GB now. Gilly

You won't notice a huge speed difference, just that you'll be able to open many more things at once before it's starts to slow down or act flaky.
Think of the memory in your computer like your desk, size particularly, you had a kids size desk so you could only open a few pages of paperwork at a time. Once it filled up you had to move some to the floor (page file). Now to get to anything you placed on the floor you have to move something off your desk so you can move it up from the floor. Now you have a big full sized desk, so you can have that much more stuff out before it fills up. Thats the basics of computer memory and the page or swap file process. (in my version of talking to non geeks). As far as limitiations, think of it as the length of your arm, you can only reach across the desk so far. Technically XP can use up to about 4 gig, but there's a lot of if's in there. You loose some to video cards, misc junk etc, but somewhere between 2 and 3 gig available is nice. Glag you got things resolved, and BB took care of you.

Mista Lim, unsure what you are asking, but wanted to thank you for the help. It has been acting normally (folks: the computer was giving me the fits after installing a pair of 1 GB sticks, and Lim is about the only guy here that I actually know personally, and he at least comiserated with me until it decided to work).
I can't say there is a tremendous difference, just possibly a little. It's a 5 yr old machine, so I have to take that in to account. To reinstal Windoze would probably be the best, but now after 5 yrs I would just have soooo muuuuch stuff to backup. I suppose eventually I'll have to do it anyways. Gilly

Awww, awright, I'll think about it. Being a tech ignoramus, can you discuss a little what the best way is to back up and reinstal things like photo images and the songs in Media Player? What do I need like lotsa CDroms or DVDs or soething? Very nervous about losing some of this stuff.

You should have a backup anyway.
Pick up a good external USB HD, I like Western Digital MyBooks, but get good unit that gives the best bang for the buck. Some will include integrated backup software. Then locate a good backup program, I recommend Acronis, but again find one you like. There are a number of shareware / freeware versions that are very good (per reviews in Technet/Cnet etc), I haven't really tried any so I can't make any suggestion. Then backup the HD, AND restore a file or 2 so you verify it works and you know the process to do a restore when you need to.

Have you ever gone thru and at least deleted the unnecessary files and defragmented? Probably not as much as you think. Find somebody with a cheap hard drive that works. I'd help you out but I am not there and also I have converted all my stuff to laptop so the drive is different, I think. I would back it all up to this hard drive and add it as a new drive to your new machine. Then you can copy it over easily.
