Time Wasters

In hopes of selling my well running 190d I had made 2 appointments with interested people.I drove out to both parties due to them not being able to exit work and the fact that my area being a distance to travel .The first TW had never seen a 2.2 190d and began by saying how quite the motor sounded , he then goes on how he would buy the car if the body was cleaner.A no rust car is a mythe but really this car is clean ,then makes a comment about how much lower I would go with the price ,I had told him before coming out my price was firm ,then tells me the engine would need rebuilding,as if it werent enough to tell were this was heading i began to shake my head and say, See Yah!Oh yeah ,he made a comment of how he was selling a car, I might call him and ask if he might drive it out so I can take a look at it,Hmmm.
The next TW was contacted and the time to call him was meet.Voicemail ,next call ,picks up and hangsup ,next call,I leave A message that Im in the area.Next message ,30 min. later,im leaving the area, next message,I pause and say "meanwhile back at the ranch"
Rants over ,but really Ill be back AGAIN telling of my next huge CL Time Waster episode .Stay Tuned.

Yep. I know exactly how that goes. Have that Civic on Craigslist, lady said she'd be out after 5 Friday. She showed up last night of all times.

That's why selling used cars is a waste of time, I'd rather donate them. Put the 190 on ebay with no reserve, that's how I disposed of my 300SD and it worked like a charm. My $700 Golf I was going to donate/junk but I put a sign in its window just for the heck of it and someone snapped it up right away. I got lucky on that one.

Why are you driving to these people? Make them come to you, most people who buy cheap cars are bums so they will suck a lot of your time. They can't get their lives together, if they could they wouldn't be looking at cheap cars. So don't expect them to be prompt for appointments, they probably have never showed up on time for a job interview either.

I agreed to make the drive out only because they seemed real positive about buying the car .Both of them worked in the same area and had been set with a need of a 2nd car for the family.Something economic and cheap ,this car fit all those requirements .I learned a lesson ,real buyers have the time and the money ready ,so Ill ask them, without question ,on their timeline.

The problems aren't limited to would-be buyers. I've interacted with a few would-be car sellers who turned out to be colossal "time wasters", too.

I have encountered this problem too many times. With selling stuff and with renting my apt. I would NEVER drive to meet someone. Also, I set up ONE appointment with the apartment. I give them ONE chance to meet me. If they call and cancel or re schedule then I would meet them again.

I agree, unless it's really worth something it's easier to donate it and take the deduction. If it's valuable, consider letting a car lot sell it on consignment. Selling cars yourself is much more trouble than it's worth.

Don't why people have such a hard time selling their cars. First, you never bring a car to a prospective buyer, if their serious, they will come to you as soon as possible. Second, you set the appointment at YOUR convience. I usually give them 30 minutes past agreed upon time then if I have to leave I leave, never wait longer if they want the car they'll call back. Always no your lowest price. If I get a slick talking salesman waving cash with a lowball offer the botton line raises accordingly. I never donated one so I wonder how the value is determined and do you get to write off the full value?

How does the donation /write off work?
Do you get the amount for a class c example of a vehicle and can that whole amount be written off?

I remember when my dad was trying to buy a cheap car for my sister, he had a $6k budget. He went to a few private sellers trying to save some money, and OMG what a waste of time. People are so messed up its amazing they can find their way to work in the morning. Ended up getting an 02 Sentra from a local dealer.

She came 5 times in a night? Bravo. She must have liked what you gave her.

Exactly. When I want to buy a car, I make an appointment and go to the seller. Does the dealership come to me to show me their wares? I go to them.

By YOU going to them, it shows you are desperate. This means I will rape you like a $10 hooker in a prison.

I had one that wanted a few hundred more than retail price. Why should I pay more than what I would at a dealership when PP sales are usually less? Her answer was: "My boyfriend told me that was what it was worth." I told her outright: When your BF is writing the check, he tells you what he thinks it is worth. When I am writing the check, I tell you what it is worth.". A few months later, I saw her ad at a PP price.
