What if you were 19 in 1967?
If you had been 19 in 1967 and you had received a letter from the draft board inviting you into the Army, what would you have done?

I would have tried to join the reserves....which I did when I graduated from Architecture school in 72.
But, I did not pass the physical. They did not like my right ear much. In '67 I don't think many folks were going to Canada and such were they? I would have said that came a couple of years later. I just read that 67 was the year Ali refused induction. He was one of the first I believe.

Obviously, I would have told them to go pound sand if I had any idea of the fiasco they were about to become involved with for the following 5 years. Running away wasn't the answer either, I think Muhammad Ali did the right thing by forcing them to arrest him.
Please edit your poll to include my choice. |

I was 7 back then, and my Dad had long finished serving in Korea before he got orders to do a tour in Vietnam...in '69 though.
Based on that, I would have served honorably if drafted. based on my Dad's military career, I should feel insulted if anyone chose otherwise...

I will always regret not carrying on my family's tradition of military service. I was too screwed up back at that age to even consider it. Looking back, it was probably exactly what I needed.

I can't edit the poll choices. Please use the following choices:
Please consider going to Canada as refusal of the draft. Please consider the reserves as a branch other than Army or Marines |

Larry- I was only 4 in 1967 but I would have done my duty to my country, just as I would do if called on to do it today. I was fortunate in that the closest I got to a war in my time of service was Grenada. (and all I did was sit on the tarmac for a week waiting to go if we were needed)
Thank you for your service. This country could use more guys like you right about now.

If I was 19 in 1967, I'd be pissed for being in second grade.

In 1967 My brother was 18 and out of high school; no college deferment or any other kind of excuses.... Prime meat for the draft....but he wouldn't face the reality that he didn't have a plan, Uncle Sam had one for him.
My Brother, After a few months of working at a factory and part time as a hoodlum and punk; My Dad sat him down and told him to get control of his destiny or let Uncle Sam or the law do it for him. The next day they drove over to the Marines recruiting office. Best thing ever for my bro, he really needed to learn discipline and grow up. Strange thing...he didn't go to Nam.

I was 10 and my uncle had served one tour in vietnam...and would later serve a second.
I would have gone. My family has a strong record of fighting for our country.
