Survey Shows Reps Smarter Than Dems

Republicans are used to thinking of Democrats as dumb. Democrats are used to thinking of Republicans as dumb. I got bored last week and decided to see if either side is right, so I took a little informal survey. Over the course of a slow half day at work, I got the political affiliations and AFQT (ASVAB score) of 18 registered voters. I used the ASVAB (Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery) as a measure of intelligence because pretty much everyone around here has taken it, and in my personal experience, scores seem to correlate pretty well with how sharp people are.

The sample included 17 Seabees and one soldier who happened to stop by my shop. I encountered 9 Republicans, 7 independents, and 2 Democrats. The average AFQT (Armed Forces Test Quotient) of the Republicans was 76. The average for independents was 72, and the average for Democrats was 56.

Sample size is a potential problem here, as there were only two Democrats, and 50% could not remember their AFQT, meaning my average for Democrats was based on one subject.

Discuss.

You must have been very bored.

Great. Time to beat a dead horse again.

edit: add pic that shows one presidential race and the states as a whole voted for. Very limited also.

Lets see: Clinton or Bush? I think eight years of Bush tells the story.

ya think??

Is that test the one where they show you a picture of a hammer, a screwdriver, and a flower and the question is "Which item is NOT a tool?":D

...and if you try to eat the test, you fail.

I hate those trick questions...

Wait a minute. Joe Biden said that Obama could not 'connect' to the American people because he was so brilliant. In other words, the American public, according to Biden, are stupid and if it weren't for the 'brilliant' leadership of an admitted disconnected leader, we'd all DIE!

He may be overestimating the intelligence of the american public.

I'd be willing to bet that he's waaaay overestimating the intelligence of the teleprompter in chief. I have never met an intellectual who couldn't hold his own without the aid of a pre-scripted argument.

Then clearly you never met our preceding president.

Have you considered sending your findings to a peer reviewed journal for review and follow up? :P

I'd say you made the mistake of underestimating the margin of error and a bad pool of potential samples.

Try and ask that question with respondents spread around the country. ;)

Not true, I conducted my own survey of 3 people, personally guessed their IQ based on outward appearance (I estimate that this correlates pretty well with how sharp people are) and it turns out the one guy who was a republican was wayyyyyyy dumber than the other two by about 20 points, which gives conclusive evidence towards reps being much dumber than the rest of the world. Sample size could be a potential problem here, since the other two were independents.

I'm glad you found something to do with your time

Craig 11-21-2010 09:53 PM

I interviewed my two dogs and my cat. The cat, who claims to be an independent, is much smarter than either dog, who's political preferences are unclear. When I'm done interviewing my daughter's pet chinchilla I will publish my results.
