I think George was a pretty important person in our history, who was able to lead people at a time when that was needed.
He was not a perfect person though and made a huge fortune, If I remember correctly, by buying land grants from veterans of one of the early wars (french and indian?) for peanuts.

GW also made much of his fortune the old fashion way, he married a rich widow. Although he was the wealthiest person in america at one time, he wasn't very "liquid," most of his wealth was in land and much of the land was in the "west" where it was not in demand (yet).
I visited mount vernon a couple of years ago, it's actually pretty humble by the standards of modern estates.
