I used to be married to a woman that came from Peru. She was pretty patriotic.

One time I tried to tease her, and I scoffed. "Ahhhh you Peruvians are just a bunch of drug traffickers and drug dillers."

To this, she instantly retorted, "Ahhhhhh you Merkins are just a bunch of drug users."

Jorge Cabrera was a drug dealer who contributed to the political campaing of Clinton who opposed legalizing any drug use or sales.

Roger Clinton was a convicted cocaine distributor who contributed to the political campaign of Clinton who opposed legalising any drug use or sales, and was pardoned by Clinton.

Horacio Vignali father of Carlos Vignali, donated tens of thousands of dollars prominent California political figures Antonio Villaraigosa, and Rep. Xavier Becerra who then lobbied on behalf of Carlos Vignali a convicted cocaine kingpin searving 15 years, Clinton commuted his sentence after he served 6 years. Hugh Roddam Clinton collected $200,000 for work on Vignali's commutation application!

Clinton never proposed or signed any law legalising any drug use or sales, despite not inhaling the marijuana he smoked as a young man!

No one said Jorge Cabrera was pardoned!

Yes, I have long believed that this iis probably the case, I am sure in some cases the pol does not realize he is being used and in some cases they do.

"Ask Bill Clinton about Jorge Cabrera and the other drug felons he pardoned! "

I don't quite know how else to interpret this sentence.

From zero to political in ten posts....

But on a more serious note, as mentioned this documentary is on youtube and well worth watching. It was very interesting to see how the first part focused on the traffickers who were more or less average Americans.

This is quite a contrast to the chapter on drug dealing in Freakonomics where the authors analyze the books of a Chicago(?) drug dealer. It comes off as a very poor paying profession, certainly not worth the legal risks.

I suppose it depends on where you are in the supply chain. More then likely the dummy selling the drugs on the corner isn't getting much of the cut. The bulk of the money seems to go to the traffickers and of course the Colombian cartels. I would imagine that not all traffickers are paid the same either. The people in the documentary had a major operation going on with multiple buildings being owned, private airstrips, aircraft, and homing beacons and backup plans should anything go wrong during transport.

I think you are correct, the street level guys are just punks who are being used by they folks with the real money; they take most of the risk for very little of the reward.

Seeking name of a series on PBS on this subject

On PBS television about 10-15 years ago there was a fictional documetary in about 5 installments about how oium was grown in Afghanstan, and the chain from the beginning to end (in this case to Holland I think) and how it works and how everyone was affected.

It was enthralling, fascinating, eye-opening anddone so well it had the ring of truth.

Any of you seen or remember the title? I would like to find it. Buy or rent it.

If this would help, I distinctly remember, the top trafficker shown in Afghanistan, drove a highly polished white Mercedes Benz W123 sedan, in the series.....

Now, back on topic...

I dug some more and finally found it.

Here's the link. ( note: This is NOT the 2004 movie "Traffic"with Benicio del Torres, but was the inspiration for it.)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096716/

plot:

The Hamburg police arrest an international businessman, charging him with smuggling heroin from Pakistan. While he's on trial, his trophy wife, a former Olympic swimmer, discovers steely ruthlessness within herself. In Pakistan, the British home minister tours the poppy-eradication project and returns to London to find that his daughter is a heroin addict. While trying to save her, and helped by a crusading attorney, he learns the limits of government policy. Fazal, a peasant burned off his land where he farmed poppies, goes to Karachi and works for Tarik Butt, a murderous drug lord. Fazal's frankness and sense of worth are his strength and his liability. Stories cross and collide.

Watch it for free, NOW here:

Watch the movie these guys were not dealers, they were the suppliers.

One shipped an estimated 300 tons of cocaine during her career, which IMHO is probably low. Whats the street value on 300 tons?

A lot of these guys never really served any jail time, they were to well insulated.
