BMW key

I have an idiot of a "friend" who was stopped for drinking and driving last Saturday. He was allowed to park his '98 5 series and take a cab home. He lost his one and only key to the car. How would you get a new key for a '98 BMW 5 series? Could be a '99, can't seem to remember. It did have a fob attached.

Have the friend call a BMW dealer with the VIN and see if they can help him.

I think he is too busy being a drunk for that.. I just thought I would help out with a least amount of effort possible.

Similar procedure to MB - Go to dealer with proof of ownership and give them money.

Yup, I did it last week for the W211; it took a couple of days and about $250.

That is what I am going to do lol....

It's just that my other half loaned him the Galant to get to work. So I am a little pissed... too busy to get a new key but plenty of time to be a drunk.

I figured the process was similar to MB key replacement.

Thanks

Nice to be a friend to a friend, but I don't know about loaning him a car that is registered under your name. If he gets pickled and clips some kid on a bike...

I say this without utilizing my trademarked sarcasm or facetiousness - call your auto insurance agent and make sure your liability coverage is in place and the liability limits are sufficient to protect you.

Also, have you verified that his license has not been suspended? If he is in your car and you knew he got nailed for a DUI that could bring down a world of hurt on your family if he gets in another accident as Paul suggested.

Personally, I'd be in a real hurry to get my car back.

Go meet up with him TODAY and take him to the BMW dealer. Make sure to take his registration.

Have them order a key and call YOU when it arrives (not him). Ask when it will arrive so you know when to expect the call.

When it arrives, go get the key, pick him up, and take him to his car. Drop him off with key and car. Once the car starts (ensuring no dead battery leaving him stranded), leave and don't loan him your car again!

You can have this all solved in 2 hours. Any longer, and he's taking your car to a bar and getting it impounded on his way home, so HURRY!

I had a new key made for the 528 last year. It cost about $45 and took a few days to get there. I needed the title to the car and proof of ID...

Now to get on my high horse...

First go get your car back NOW!
You do not need him getting wasted and killing somebody in your vehicle - even if the insurance covered it, how would YOU live with it?
If you have to, take him to Hertz and have him rent a car in his name...

I know if anybody like that wanted to borrow my car esp. after losing the key to their car while drunk, I would tell them to get lost...

It's not quite as bad as it sounds. He went to the airport for work and the car will be parked in the lot for two days until he gets back from work/trip(flight crew). By drunk I mean he goes out to a bar 7 nights a week and gets very drunk. If he drinks while working he will not be driving.

When he was stopped Saturday he was NOT charged with anything, just told to go home and not drive. He gets lucky like that all the time. I do not make the car payment, thank god, on the Galant so I was told to stay out of it.... although I do pay the insurance. I am more concerned about him wrecking the car cause it needs tires and there is snow on the ground.

I will tell him a new key is like $45 and that we need to go get one.

Thanks for the info

I don't associate with people like that, and if I came across one, would not be offering help. People who drink and drive deserve the worst possible.

For the $50 I would take his registration, pretend to be him and go get they key, or drag his butt to the dealer. Since your other half is making a very big mistake in lending him that car.

If its in a bad accident they will be coming after you.
