Got a new watch...

I went to Atlantic City for New Years and I won a couple bucks at the casino. I'm not a big gambler, my budget was like $30, but I got lucky! So I bought a watch.

Its really cool, I can watch the gears inside move and it has a kinda Rolex like movement to the second hand. I like a mechanical watch, its interesting to see the gears.

I like that.

I had a watch for a while that had all the gears showing, fossil I think it was. Unfortunately it was not very high quality and soon gummed up. I never was able to wear any watches more than a couple of years whether they cost $20 or $200!

It looks like it may even have at least 1 jewel in there.
Our fellow member in Singapore could probably get 10 look a likes of that for a dollar on any street corner!!
The replacement battery will probably cost more than the watch though!!

This is obviously not a battery powered watch, if thats what you're suggesting. It probably has a chinese or japanese movement with 17 or 21 jewels. Nice watch.. after you wear a mechanical its hard to go back to quartz watches.

It looked like there was an electromagnet around the outside of the movement.

They had only just started selling LED watches when I left school.
LCD had not been thought of. Many mechanical watches had a electro part back as far as the 1960's.
I had a Timex self winding as a teenager. If you forgot to put it on for a few days it needed a good shaking to get it started.

That is a nice looking watch Hattie has !!!

The fakes always like to copy the good ones!!

What electronic part? Are you talking about the old tuning fork watches?

Mechanical meaning hairspring, mechanical escapement, etc. Yeah they will stop running after 44-50+ hours depending on the particular movement.

Anyways, you can see the balance wheel right in the picture plus it says automatic on it

Correct if I don't keep wearing it, it will stop ticking, no electronics in this watch!

Back of the case.

It's good looking. Personally I'd never spend the money on such a watch, even if I won it. I never take my watch off and need a rubber or web band due to constant water, soil, hay, manure and other yucky stuff. For dress, usually only funerals, I have a 1942 gold Bulova, kind of art deco style. Inscribed on the back from my mother to my dad. Still keeps great time.

Gotta love real watches. I read an IWC watch book once and was quite impressed with everything that went into making them. Very cool to see a video....you need PATIENCE to make one of those things that's for sure.

Correct.....and precision. I've had several Rolexes, sold my last one in favor of an IWC Pilot Chrono.

Looks like a nice watch. It's an Automatic. I like Automatic watches. Thing is, they're a thicker and heavier then Quartz movements. The wind down time should be at least around 30 hours or so, meaning there is no problem if you take it off over night, she'll still run the next day.
