Firewood this year to heat? Out of necessity, we started burning firewood in our Buffalo Stove this year for heat. What kind of heat source do you guys/gals use for heat.

We moved into a house with a steam boiler, oil fired for the radiators, and there is also a wood/coal fired hot air furnace that will heat the first floor that I have yet to try out (want to clean the ducts first).

The bonus was the 40 50 lb bags of coal already in the basement, and I just found out a friend of mine deals coal on the side and is willing to sell me washed, bagged hard stove coal at cost.

After going through a 275 gal tank of oil in a little over 3 weeks I gotta get on that ductwork!!

I'll burn the beer off shoveling coal

We burn gas. I used to use wood in my old house which had four fireplaces but wood is a real pain. Under certain circumstances it probably makes financial sense, such as if you own a tree trimming business.

I do love watching a wood fire, for sure.

Ill burn an outside fire for warmth while drinking a 6 pack at nighttime ,with 35 degree temps here it makes for a nice evening.An old washing machine gave up its stainless tub for the burn barrel ,it will Never rot and has the holes to air up the fire really well already in place.I live on 4 acres in an old farm house and its always visited by various wild life making things interesting for my dog.A few big dead oaks fell last week giving me another years worth of camp fire fun.Heat is an expensive endeavor for you guys up north Im sure.

I have a friend that owns a tree trimming business and he brings me all the wood I want for free. Some is green and some is seasoned from last year.

We use gas. My home fireplace is mostly decorative, it probably uses more energy than it produces.

Gas. Fireplace was converted to gas as well.

Some guys use a hot water coil thru the coal stove to heat the water before entering the boiler. Here is an excellent site for your coal burning questions: http://nepacrossroads.com/forum-74.html

You'll also burn a little more beer getting rid of the ash- the major drawback to coal, IMO.
