I think that if gun ownership could be traced and you could not just sell guns behind closed doors things might improve a bit.

I would also like to see requirements for storing weapons as well. That would deal with the "my gun was stolen' issue. 2nd says that you can own a gun, not that it cannot be regulated.

May be while the republicans are 'clarifying' the 14th they can do it for the rest of the COTUS.
Most people who do not wish to see guns regulated or have "storage" requirements is because they do not wish to be on a "list" that could easily be used for confiscation. If you think confiscation doesnt occur, talk to legal gun owning citizens who, post Katrina and in the Carolinas, had their ability to defend themselves taken away by the very agencies that were sworn to defend them and then admitted that they couldn't.

A stored gun, unloaded and secured is useless in a home invasion type scenario and also in most "intruder at night" situations. If you choose to be able to protect yourself with a a weapon, it must be readily available.

A for instance: When I lived in TX, we lived far away from any neighbors, out in the country. It was a rugged area, rife with unemployed, desperate people and also meth labs and meth users (the whole county). A call to law enforcement got you a 15-20 minute wait time. My wife kept a short barrel Mossberg 500 nearby when outside, both for protection against snakes and wild animals, but also for errant intruders. Once, a car with people unknown to us came cruising up our 1/4 mile driveway and lingered in near the house. When hailed by the wife, they didnt say anything. When she came out on the porch, with the shotgun cradled in her arms, they hurredly left. One can only assume that they were up to no good. This took place in a matter of less than a two minutes: why would she have to take extra time to get her weapon from "storage"? Trouble rarely comes to most people but when it does, it usually boils down to a short reaction time to do something to save your life.

The more likely scenario is that your "readily available" weapon will be stolen by some kid and used to hold up a liquor store in the next town.

There are plenty of systems designed for safe storage and also quick access. Not an issue in my book.

Owning a gun should require the same things as owning a car. Obtaining a license, which would include passing a typical psychological exam as is used when enlisting in the Armed Forces, passing a background check for felonies and proving one could competently operate a firearm, followed by the registration of the firearm after proving one has obtained insurance coverage in case of it's accidental use. I am not against owning guns, I am against lunatics, felons and terrorists owning guns. The Constitution says gun owners comprise a Well-regulated Militia. Well, they don't.
Would you also require re-testing on a regular basis, much like vehicle and license registration requires?

He apparently forgot to mention all the cars owned and driven by illegal aliens without driver's licenses OR insurance as well...

What argument?

If you really want to go that way, make it a fairly difficult process and pass on the cost of the testing, training, background checks, etc. to the purchaser/owner.

Since when did you have to have a license to own a car? I bought my first car when I was 13yo.

Background checks are as good as the background data.

It has already been established that the comparison between gun and car ownership is not exact. There are some similarities that are being used as an example such as inspection, transfer of ownership for example.

We do not need lunatics, felons and traitors in the National Militia, and so Congress can provide that this does not occur or is mitigated as much as possible. Since a lunatic, felon or traitor cannot conform to the regulations of the Militia, he forfeits his right to own a gun, as much as a felon forfeits his voting rights.

If I recall correctly:
1. felons also forfeit the right to own a firearm, and
2. felons convicted of crimes involvolving a firearm also forfeit the right to use a gun of any kind in certain states.

How about allowing the seller a measure of personal discretion. I know a sporting goods dealer who has ben uncomfortable selling weapons or ammo but has no "good" reason not to. How would tjhat stand up in court?

I was just pointing out that if the goal is to harass potential gun buyers to the point that they give up (without getting on the wrong side of the second amendment), the best way is to pass laws that make it difficult, time consuming, and very expensive to buy a gun.

Personally, I don't really care either way; just suggesting a tactic.

Wasn't aimed at you in particular, just a general comment about background checks.

I agree that they are pretty worthless unless they are exhaustive, and those are very expensive.
