What purpose was that? They were going to go up and practice flying in a large group?

Surely there not heading for Afganistan to do a little carpet bombing?

Getting as many birds off the ground to strike targets in the USSR before the missiles already in the air incinerate the air base.

M.A.D. in action.

It can with an air bridge! That's why tankers practice the same exercises.

Yessir -- like many airframes, it depends on the model (i.e. which engines it has). Some need them, some don't.

Several models in the inventory used water injection at takeoff for increased thrust -- hence the smoke. Pretty neat to see in-person! Wouldn't want to be the last guy in that formation trying to get down the runway, though; talk about a smoke-screen!
