Ready to meet a Wooly Mamoth?

Cloning

On the one hand it is a fascinating idea to be able to bring back a creature that no modern day human has ever seen. The other part of me asks why and do we need to do it just because we can. They are extinct for a reason. So we really need/ant to mess with nature in this manner?

I think the reason they are extinct is early man hunting them to extinction. It is an interesting question. The world of continually proliferating man has less and less room for wild elephants. Where would woolly mammoths find habitat, outside of a few preserves. But even that would be interesting.

It's a tough call.

They've been talking about this for years. Probably going to be another 10-20 before they actually pull it off.

For those who believe in global warming; when they finally pull it off the poor critter will probably end up having a heat stroke

I'm in the boat that it was due more to climate and environmental changes then anything else. The human populations were still far too small and isolated to kill off all the mammoths especially when there were plenty of other things to eat as well.

As far as I can tell the last known population of mammoths died out naturally and were not hunted to extinction.

They are really starting to play around with this stuff. Just this weekend there was a short on the H channel about some goats they geneticaly modified with spider DNA and these (goats), milk produces some sort of thread that is stronger than steel. WTF over

A bunch of well-preserved mammoths were found at a very high elevation in Colorado this past fall when excavation was being done for a water storage pond. They had some parts on exhibit at the Natural History Museum but it was only for one day and I missed them.

They shouldn't clone things. I am a product of the early 1960's cloning. My real name is Methuselah.

I think science should be allowed to work on whatever they can think of. I agree there is no practical use for a mammoth now but who knows what might come of it?
