Democratic Republic, as we DO have elected officials...but we are also a Constitutional Republic.

If we were a Democracy, we would be holding votes on a nearly daily basis, and nobody would ever get any real work done.

It is neither one.

It is a plutocracy. The large banks, big pharma, insurance and oil companies and big business bribe the legislature through the system of lobbying, that has been fully entrenched for many decades.

It pervades both political parties but in scope and breadth the Republicans are far far worse.

The public at large is meanwhile distracted and gets whipped up by hate radio, with all that vitriol, and the other media reports on divisive issues like gun control, abortion, gay rights, alleged racism and other hot buttons that make people furious.

The United States is a plutocracy. Plain and simple.

With the almost unrestricted access to firearms in this country, deaths by shooting are a natural outgrowth. We're just going to have to live (and die) with it. You can't bemoan every one -- there are too many.

By the way, most fatal gunshot wounds are self-inflicted. The media hardly ever reports those, except as a statistic.

Agreed.

Do you have any statistic to support that? I had never heard that argument before. There were over 15,000 homicides in 2008, of those about 10,000 used guns. According to your theory, over 5,000 were self inflicted? I am not buying that without proof.

I was relying on CDC numbers that came up near the top of my google search queue. They're easy to find for those who care to look:

So yeah, it's two of three homicides by firearm but "only" 50% of suicides. Which is understandable -- there are plenty of less gory ways to take yourself out than with a bullet.

That makes sense. I misunderstood what you wrote. I was just looking at the 15,000 homicides and thinking that half of those were suicides which did not make sense to me.

I had no idea that many people committed suicide each year. That is a scary stat.
