Geez! That looks expensive.
I wonder whether it is really a V16. I thought most big motors like that were inline, not vee. |

Someone's going to have some 'splaining to do. "No sir, I wasn't sleeping or drunk, it didn't given any warning noises at all before it let go."
That explains the Craiglist ad I saw, "Looking for a used locomotive diesel . . ."

Those big locomotives have been V16s, or V12s since WWII.

Could be, but I think most of the triangle engines were found in boats.

They were very popular in British locomotives in the 60's.

Seems like there were less than 25 of those class 55s.

Ive changed those cylinders. Its from a GE 4400 hp. Only 4 bolts hold it on. Piston rings the size of a tamborine!

For grins, I sent the link of the ballistic power assembly to my friend that's a towboat engineer. He was on a line-haul towboat called the Joy Anne Keller from the time she was launched until about two years ago. The Keller was powered by two EMD 710-V16s each making about 4400hp at the time. AEP quickly learned that having the fire turned up that much on those engines created it's own set of problems. Most often, the small end of the con rod would fail and the rod would proceed to saw a slot about 12" wide through the block weldment before he could get the engine shut down. They backed off the fuel and significantly extended the life of those engines.

Big heavy lumps of metal like that take a bit of stopping, they dont say excuse me as they go through a wall. Hey it had 15 more of them working, whats the big deal? ![]() Just a case of Piston broke or was that p!ssed & broke? Or does that describe the guy that last put the motor together? I wonder where the rod went?
