Scientologiest are everywhere

Who knew?

I went to I-20 Animal Medical Center here in Arlington TX. My dog had a laceration on her chest whe my wife and I got home on Sat night. She did a web search for an emergency clinic near us and they popped up. A simple 1 inch laceration and they wanted over $550. My wife said do it before my heart stopped and I hit the floor. Nothing I could do. Anyway, we went to our vet today because one of the stitches was coming loose. We told the tech where we went and he said "OH, the Scientology place."

WTF? When did they branch out into vets? I thought they were just selling books and religion?

Never going there again.

Scientologist owner of a software company near Denver shot and killed his CFO who quit because he thought the owner was funneling too much money to Scientology.

This thread is important for one reason: We should all take more time to learn who we are doing business with. Scientology has a long track record of abuses. People who get in their way have been known to disappear.

they are head quartered in Clearwater Fla. I dont think anyone can own a business there that is not a Scientologist. I stay away, but when you drive through town the uniforned students are everywhere

Nobody on the forum that I have seen as ever expressed a commitment to Scientology. Surely there must be a few here.

Well, for an after hours thing, that is not too bad. If it was a clinic visit, I could say 3-4 hundred depending on what was necessary. If we were good friends and nearby and it can be done easily without total sedation, my wife could give it a whirl for nothing. So it depends. Emergency clinics always cost more.

and, just because someone says, "Oh, the Scientology place" doesn't necessarily make it so. It may mean that a mere employee that works at the clinic is a Scientologist, or, it may mean that the owners are Scientologist. It would require more investigation before jumping to a conclusion.

Make friends with a large animal vet. They make house calls and charge less.

True but that only applies to certain treatments. If the animal has to be anesthetized, I don't know that they can do it at home. My wife can sew lacerations and has done it too. However, whether I want her to get involved with knocking out an animal is a different story. That is the trick of the sewing up of lacerations. You cannot tell the dog to "bite on a bullet" and hold still. Say you use lidocaine to numb the site, the dog will still wiggle. Also, lidocaine is one of the drugs that is used to jump start a heart. Might not be good if you simply stick it in. Beyond that, the sewing is easy. You can get a seamstress to sew it up after you get past that tricky part.

My vet has done emergency anaesthesia on large animals here a couple of times. It's risky and I'd only do it in a life threatening situation. I don't know about pets though. You can't take a downed show horse to the dr.'s office.
Stitching's easy. I normally do my own for small to medium cuts. Sub-Q lidocaine has little effect on heartrate, IM will affect it greatly. Normally I don't even stitch a 1 inch cut. If there's no arterial bleeding, I wash it out first with peroxide, then 7% iodine, wait till bleeding gets to the sticky stage, and glue it shut with superglue gel or NuSkin, same thing. Then I paint another layer of glue over the cut. A shot of long acting antibiotic and that's it. I've had lots of secondary infections from stitches, none when I use superglue and virtually no scarring.

I know nothing about horses except that they poop and piss a huge load. Our difficulty was getting the dog to hold still after it has gotten a gash like that. How deep a gash before you suture?

I know it would cost more, but how much more is the question. When I was talking to my vet he said that these places have to charge more because that is their soul source of income. No boarding, grooming, regular vet incomes.. etc. I mentioned to him that this place has all of that. Then the light went off and he said, OH, you went to the scientology place.

When I did a web search I ran across several folks complaining about the outrageous prices. Complaints similar to mine in that they seem to be concerned more with money for the mother ship than helping the patients. I was expecting $300-$400. When she came in with the $643 I was speechless. My vet charged $350 or so for a spay with all shots for a dog in heat. That seems far more involved than a simple laceration ut what do I know.

I do know I will not give the scientology folks any more of my money as long as I can help it.

Nope, at least not in this case. Google I20 animal hospital. The EEOC had a case filed and they settled for $150k with 6 employees.

I20 v EEOC

Not sure about this one but it does seem to be well referenced.

Break down
